Traverse
Year I Semester I A series of connected straight each joining two
points on the ground is called a traverse.
Closed Traverse
The lines either return to the starting point or close on a
point of known position. Known
Point
If it returns to the starting point, the traverse is called a
closed circuit traverse.
When closing to a different point of known Position, it
is called a closed connecting traverse
Open Traverse
Known Point
The traverse which neither returns to its stating station

Meridians
Plane table traversing The fixed direction (pole to pole) on the surface of
Compass traversing the earth is called a meridians.
Theodolite traversing
Bearing
Tacheometric traversing
EDM Traversing The horizontal angle between the reference meridian
and the survey line measured in clockwise direction
is called bearing.
True Meridian
The line passing through the North pole ,South pole and any Grid Meridian
point on the surface of the earth is known as “ True An arbitrary meridian (one adopted for a particular project) -
Meridians” . a mathematically determined value. All are parallel to each
The angle between the true meridian and a line is known as other
‘True bearing ’ Any Arbitrary Meridian
Magnetic Meridian Any convenient direction
The Direction indicated by a suspended needle, which is free
to rotate in a horizontal plane and about a vertical axis is
called ‘ magnetic meridians’
The angle between the magnetic meridian and a line is known
as ‘ magnetic bearing ’

Magnetic Declination
True & Magnetic Meridian
The Earth acts like a great spherical magnet, in that it is
surrounded by a magnetic field. TN GN
MN
This means that the north and south geographic poles and the
north and south magnetic poles are not located in the same
place.
The angle between magnetic north and the true north direction Grid Convergence 1´
TM Projection
is called magnetic declination.
