• Giving thanks for the Creator’s gifts had always been a part of Wampanoag daily
life.
• From ancient times, Native People of North America have held ceremonies to give
thanks for successful harvests, for the hope of a good growing season in the early
spring, and for other good fortune such as the birth of a child.
• Historically, Thanksgiving began as a tradition of celebrating the harvest of the year.
• The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 when the
Pilgrims invited the Native Americans to a three-
day feast to celebrate the autumn harvest.
• The Pilgrims and the Wampanoag also used this
holiday to thank God for what they had in their
lives.
• Everyone follows the custom of family dinner and reunion religiously every year.
• For centuries, 'Thanksgiving Day' is associated with communal prayers in church and in homes.
• People offer various meal time prayers during the day.
