INTRODUCTION
Electronic waste is a waste consisting of any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic appliance.
Electronic waste (e-waste) comprises of waste electronic goods which are not fit for their originally intended use.

National scenario
As per a report by MAIT India generated 3,32,979 tonnes of E-waste was generated in the year 2007 and the number is expected to reach 8,00,000 tonnes by 2012. 65 cities generated more than 60% of the total E-waste generated in India. Among the 10 states (Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, MP and Punjab), Maharashtra ranks first in the e-waste generation. The total e-waste generation in Maharashtra accounts for 20,270.6 tons per year.

The need of the hour is an urgent approach to the e-waste hazard by technical and policy-level interventions, implementation and capacity building and increase in public awareness such that it can convert this challenge into an opportunity to show the world that India is ready to deal with future problems and can set global credible standards concerning environmental and occupational health.
