INTRODUCTION
Electronic waste is a waste consisting of any broken or unwanted electrical or electronic appliance.

Electronic waste (e-waste) comprises of waste electronic goods which are not fit for their originally intended use.
Non-working earphones, taperecorders, CRT monitors, cassettes etc.

E -WASTE GENERATED EVERY YEAR

INTERNATIONAL SCENARIO
In 2011, 3.41 million tons of e-waste generated in the U.S. Of this amount, only 8,50,000 tons or 24.9 % was recycled, according to the EPA. The rest was trashed in landfills or incinerators. 50 to 80% of e-wastes collected by U.S. is exported to India, China and African countries for recycling. Exported e-waste recycling and disposal in China, India and Pakistan is highly polluting.

CONTD
National scenario
As per a report by MAIT India generated 3,32,979 tonnes of E-waste was generated in the year 2007 and the number is expected to reach 8,00,000 tonnes by 2012. 65 cities generated more than 60% of the total E-waste generated in India. Among the 10 states (Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, Karnataka, MP and Punjab), Maharashtra ranks first in the e-waste generation. The total e-waste generation in Maharashtra accounts for 20,270.6 tons per year.

E-WASTE MANAGEMENT

It is the first government-authorized eco-friendly recycling

unit which makes full use of e-waste.

The plant, which is India's first scientific e-waste recycling

unit, aims to reduce pollution, landfill waste and recover

valuable metals, plastics and glass from waste in an ecofriendly manner. It protects data from discarded PCs and guarantees customers confidentiality.

INITIATIVES REGARDING EWASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIA

Earth Sense Recycle Private Limited
It is the joint venture between the E-Parisaraa Private Limited and M/S. GJ Multiclave India Private Limited. It is a bio-medical waste handling and management company. This company came into existence in the year 2000 and they recycle all types of e-wastes including de-bound assets and other electrical and electronic equipment. It offers safe and reliable disposal of e-waste. The Govt. of India as well as the Pollution Control Board has certified the company.

Trishyiraya Recycling India Pvt. Ltd (TPL)

CONTD
It has constant surveillance mechanisms like CCTV Monitors etc.

TPL feels proud of its innovative technology that helps recycle e-waste.
It was a partnership program between EPA and leading consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, and mobile service providers that promoted opportunities for individuals to donate or recycle their electronics. Plug-In to e-Cycling has changed into the Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) E-Cycling includes recycling and recovers valuable materials from old electronics which can be used to make new products. It also includes reducing greenhouse gas emission, reducing pollution, saving energy and resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.

E-WASTE MANAGEMENT:NOKIA SETS EXAMPLE

Nokia began its e-waste management campaign in 2008. In the first phase of its campaign, Nokia set up drop boxes across the country to take back used phones, chargers and accessories, irrespective of the brand, at Nokia Care Centres or Priority Dealers.

After the necessary infrastructure was set up, Nokia entered into the
second phase of the campaign, which involved the public. Nokias mass campaign was implemented on January 1, 2009 in four cities of the country: Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Ludhiana.

CONTD
According to PRANSHU SINGHAL The total quantity of mobile phones

and accessories collected f rom this campaign since its launch in 2009 is
160 tonnes. The e-waste collection has grown from three tonnes in 2009 to 65 tonnes in 2012.

Nokia Planet Ke Rakhwaale

Nokia launched PLANET KE RAKHWALE take-back and recycling campaign , which extended to 28 cities across India. Conducted in more than 1,200 schools across India.

An activity/games based workshop session for selected group of

40 students in two groups from classes 6-8 and 9-12.

Gifts to be distributed to students contributing in the drive. Gifts

include recycled plastic pen sets made from recycling of a

mobile phone handset. More than 20,000 mobile handsets and over 15,000 chargers have been collected as a part of this program.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACTION

Technical interventions Inventory management Production process modification Volume reduction Recovery and reuse Use of renewable materials and energy Rethinking on procedures of designing the product ( flat computer) Green packaging option Policy level intervention Take back policies Awareness building Donating for reuse Buy energy efficient , recycled products Public awareness campaigns

CONCLUSION
India is placed in a very interesting position. The need of the hour is an urgent approach to the e-waste hazard by technical and policy-level interventions, implementation and capacity building and increase in public awareness such that it can convert this challenge into an opportunity to show the world that India is ready to deal with future problems and can set global credible standards concerning environmental and occupational health.
