5. Personal Integrity and Self Development

Personal Integrity:

Ethics is the study of moral choices--about the values that lie behind them; the reasons people give for them, and the language they use to describe them. It is about innocence and guilt, right and wrong, and what it means to live a good or bad life. It is about the dilemmas of life, death, violence and money. It explores human virtues and vices, rights and duties. Rudyard Kipling's (1865-1936) poem is a set of rules for 'grown-up' livingset in the Victorian context of the British Empire. Kipling's poem contains mottos and maxims for life, and is a blueprint for personal integrity, behaviour and self-development.

If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowance for their doubting too, If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream--and not make dreams your master, If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
4

If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!" If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

Buddhists have five basic precepts or guides to moral behaviour:

Not to destroy life, and to minimize the suffering of other species Not to take what is not given, to be dishonest or grasping for material goods Not to speak falsely Not to lie or give a false impression Not to use sexuality to harm, and to treat women with respect. Buddhists cultivate four mental states: Love - to all creatures including yourself Pity compassion for all who suffer Joy an unselfish sharing in the happiness of others Serenity freeing oneself from the anxieties of success and failure, and being equal minded in dealing with other people

Both Christianity and Buddhism have some things that are the same: A respect for life A respect for the weak and disenfranchised A rejection of violence An emphasis on charity and good deeds Both religions say: Treat other people as you would like to be treated yourself

The person of integrity is always honest, which can be a challenge. I remember sometime ago I took my family on vacation to Los Vegas City and on the way back we stopped at a nice restaurant. So we ordered a meal. When it came time to pay the bill, I discovered that I did not have my wallet. I realized I had locked it in the trunk, along with the key to the trunk. I explained my problem to the manager and he was understanding and gave me his address and I fully intended to mail him a check the very next day I got home. Well, I was surprised how I hesitated writing that check after reaching home. I have to admit that I thought to myself: He's miles away; I will never see him again; and I could use that extra money. It took me about an hour of arguing with myself before I finally wrote the check and sent it to him. I soon felt good and proud.

The world admires and benefits those that have high integrity. If you are a person of integrity, a person of quality, a person of excellence, the world will reward you. This is an important key to being a winner in life and business.

People will be attracted to you, be persuaded by you and willing to help you toward your ends, to do the things that you want them to do. To be a person of high integrity go the extra mile, do more than you have promised. If you have an appointment, try to be early for your appointment. You respect the other person's time, you do not come late. That communicates 9 your time is more important than theirs.

When one does the right thing, he feels proud of himself. And he knows when he does the wrong thing, he might forget it and think that although he did something that was not quite right, he will get away with it. If there is a person of integrity, he is always respected and trusted and he will accomplish more than what he ever dreamed that he could.
He will have ultimate happiness, he can give himself unconditional high self regard. In order to accept oneself totally, he has to do things that are not always easy, but things of which he can be proud of.

Self-development: The acquisition of knowledge is the beginning of self-development and continual learning allows for greater development. Yet the acquisition of knowledge alone does not guarantee that any changes will take place. It is folly to seek selfdevelopment without acquiring knowledge.
11

All humans possessing a healthy intellect acquire knowledge both by experiences and by teachings. "Let your conscience be your guide" should be followed and by applying the right conscience, one should acquire right knowledge for self-development. Not all knowledge leads to self-development and not all knowledge provides a good metric for evaluating development. That is why, right type of knowledge is required for self-development, just as nothing happens, if you do not download an MPEG or similar audio file into an MP3 player i.e proper content is to be put into an audio player.

Wisdom-based Leadership for Relationships, Decisions & Well-being

The best way to develop leadership is by evoking wisdom. When intellect and experience are infused with wisdom, common challenges of conflict, uncertainty and stress can be transformed. Relationships Difficult relationships and disruptive communications increase stress, corrode morale, and diminish productivity. Create powerful relationships and watch leaders thrive.

13

Decisions Clarity for decision-making is an issue when there is a lack of information or perspective, external pressure or conflicting desires. Raise awareness, shift perspective and clarity will surface. Well-being Well-being is the foundation for a host of critical factors for leaders: energy, health, productivity, relationships, and potential. Stress less and notice that disease dissolves.

14

Relationships, Decisions and Well-being are the three links that expose potential challenges, solutions and results for further explanation of each area. I had a feeling I shouldnt have done that. Thats because the louder voice of ego has triumphed again. Ego, driven by fear, is obsessed with approval, power and security. True self, driven by wisdom, provides exceptional guidance and creates extraordinary resultsif you can decipher which voice it is.

15

For balance and well-being If the fast lane can be dangerous to your health, why is it so compelling? Because people are fixated on more, more, more and better, better, better. Is there no end? If youre tired of the craziness, you just might be ripe enough to live life differently. Join those who are courageously stepping into the flow and reaping the rewards. The Mysteries of Relating Behind the veils of persona lies a treasure yearning to be discovered Awareness is the centerpiece of relationships. Through deeper observation of ourselves and others, the mystery begins to unravel. We see what motivates behavior and, therefore, dont get caught as easily in the jaws of conflict. The one with a wider perspective and open mind can navigate even the trickiest terrain with agility and success. This journey calls for effective communication tools, not native to a particular land land. Imagine a language with curiosity instead of evaluation of anotherwith requests instead of demandswith respect instead of manipulation. Come discover the treasures awaiting you along this path. 16

Womens Leadership, the Feminine Way Blossoming fully as empowered women Women have a natural wisdom and compassion that is often contaminated by attempting to imitate masculine leadership. Their leadership has its own strength and beauty, and its strongly needed to bring balance in the society. Women can find more peaceful solutions in their organizations and in their country. They can influence and invite men to rethink harsher ways. Women can demonstrate that at times feeling the mens feelings is not weak, but courageous and brings forth compassion, explores the edges. **********The End**********
