This document contains slides and descriptions of various respiratory system pathologies including:
1) Asbestosis characterized by diffuse pulmonary fibrosis and the presence of asbestos bodies and ferruginous bodies.
2) Emphysema, bronchopneumonia, necrotizing pneumonia, lung abscess, organizing pneumonitis, and chronic passive congestion.
3) Hyaline membrane disease, large cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and bronchioalveolar carcinoma including the mucinous subtype.
4) Tuberculosis characterized by the presence of Langhan's cells.

Altera Deo Servimus 2019 AY 2016-2017 Asbestosis • Diffuse pulmonary interstitial fibrosis + asbestos bodies (golden brown, fusiform or beaded rods with a translucent center and consist of asbestos fibers coated with an iron- containing proteinaceous material)
• Ferruginous bodies – other
inorganic particulates coated with similar iron-protein complexes
• Pleural plaques – most
common manifestation; well- circumscribed plaques of dense collagen that are often calcified. Emphysema Bronchopneumonia Necrotizing PNA Necrotizing PNA + Lung Abscess. Cavity filled with bacteria and neutrophils; no alveoli. Organizing Pneumonitis Chronic Passive Congestion Hyaline Membrane Disease Large Cell CA Small Cell CA Squamous Cell CA Bronchioalveolar Carcinoma [BRONCHIOLOALVEOLAR CARCINOMA, MUCINOUS]. Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma (BAC) is a type of adenocarcinoma that grows along alveolar septae. Two main subtypes are recognized: mucinous and non-mucinous. This mucinous type BAC shows normal alveoli on the upper left corner and BAC on the right lower corner. Radiographically BAC may present as consolidation mimicking pneumonia and thus may evade correct identification.
