Fabrication Products
Our proprietary fabrication products include our line of ultra-lightweight racing mufflers (detailed on pages
5-7) and lightweight air filter and plenum assemblies (detailed on page 8). We are also the North American
importer for ITG Air Filters for road and racing (detailed on pages 8-12). Other fabrication products and
accessories are detailed below.
T Bolt Clamps
The preferred method of attachment for our ultra lightweight mufflers. These stainless steel clamps
slide over the swaged end of the muffler to hold it to your exhaust pipe. “T” bolt is 1/4-28 with an all
metal self-locking nut.
Please contact us for details on tubing material and wall thickness and collector type (merge or tri-y). All collectors are
made-to-order and priced on request. Please also note that:
Coast Fabrication has been producing Ultra-Lightweight Racing Mufflers since 1995. Over the years Coast Fab mufflers
have become the muffler of choice for many teams competing in both professional and amateur road and oval track racing.
The durability of Coast Fab mufflers has been proven by use on the winning car at the Rolex 24 hours of Daytona on multiple
occasions. Coast Fab mufflers are also found on sports cars, drag cars, motorcycles, off-road vehicles, high-end road cars,
and even some airplanes. They have also been the “spec” muffler for several racing series. Most recently Coast Fab mufflers
have been developed to withstand the extreme conditions experienced with rotary powered high performance vehicles.
Dyno tests performed by professional race engine builders have shown that freshly packed Coast Fab mufflers show little or
no detriment to horsepower or torque when compared to un-muffled systems.
All Coast Fab mufflers are fully TIG welded, use 100% 304 Stainless Steel construction, and have the unique feature of being
easily repackable. Several options for muffling cartridge materials are available; all are easily replaceable. These mufflers
are hand built in Huntington Beach, California by racecar fabricators, not mass-produced road car parts adapted for racing.
Their fit and finish deserve to be shown front and center, not hidden under the car. In short, these mufflers are designed to
offer the highest performance at the lightest weight possible, combined with ease of maintenance, maximum durability, and
super fit & finish.
• Removable/replaceable perforated core which allows thermal expansion as well as easy and
fast repacks and rebuilds
• Both inlet and outlet tubes are sized to slip over common exhaust pipe sizes allowing the
muffler to be used in the middle or at the end of a system
Coast Fabrication’s latest development is a Two-Stage Racing Muffler (pictured below) for use in situations where
greater sound reduction is needed and space is at a premium. The first section of the muffler incorporates the same core
and packing configuration as the standard Coast Fab muffler. The recently updated second section now includes diffusers
and a stainless mesh wrapped core. This feature allows for greater at-track tunability. Two-Stage mufflers have been used
successfully worldwide at racetracks with stringent sound regulations. These mufflers are sized specifically to the customer’s
requirements.
Custom lengths can be easily and quickly accommodated in many cases. Call us to discuss your needs.

Air Filters
In early 2002, Coast Fabrication, Inc. entered an agreement with Induction Technology Group (ITG) to act as the exclusive
North American importer for ITG air filters used in motorsports. We import and specify ITG filters for one simple reason:
THEY ARE THE BEST AIR FILTERS MADE.
Why ITG?
The ultimate proving ground for any performance product has always been racing. ITG’s racing history is impressive, with
numerous wins in World Rally, Touring Cars, Sports and Prototypes, etc. Here in the USA, ITG filters have enjoyed many
victories and championships in Sprint car and Midget racing and were also used by Indianapolis 500 winners on multiple
occasions. In an arena where only performance matters, ITG filters have been used on the championship winning car in the
FIA Formula 1 World Championship on many occasions.
In close cooperation with ITG, Coast Fabrication continues to develop intake systems and air filters for racing, high
performance and special applications.
PROTOTYPES, SPECIALS, AND LOW VOLUME ORDERS CAN BE EASILY, QUICKLY AND COST-EFFECTIVELY
ACCOMODATED. Please contact Gary Donahoe by phone or email ( GaryDonahoe@coastfab.com) to discuss your ideas
or requirements.

These versatile filters are easily recognizable by their twin bright red bands around the top
and bottom; they should not be confused with the many inferior types of foam air filters. The
red bands are the visible part of two fiber-reinforced nylon injection moldings which form
the structure to which three-layer filter foam is bonded. The outer two layers give optimum
filtration and ‘load-up’ capacity, while the inner layer is made of a special fire retardant filter
foam. Together they give the best combination for airflow, engine protection, and safety.
» Baseplates
Baseplates for Megaflow filters are available as blanks (aluminum) or pre-cuts (red powder coated
steel) to fit a variety of carburetors and injectors. Blank baseplates are stock items and application-
specific pre-cuts are typically special order from the factory. Contact us for further information.
Coast Fabrication, Inc and ITG both recommend the use of NO-TOIL biodegradable foam filter
oil. Because this product is water-soluble, filter cleaning and maintenance requires only warm
water and common liquid dish washing soap or NO-TOIL cleaner. After the filter is shaken off and
air-dried (no high pressure air or hot air blowers, please) it can be lightly re-oiled and returned to
service.

During the past few decades, racing vehicles ranging from Indy and F1 cars to offroad trucks have
increasingly used aircraft and military specification hardware and fasteners in their construction, and with
good reason: as the size of the hardware that racers are accustumed to using decreases, its quality and
load-bearing capabilities must necessarily increase. Today’s competition vehicles are significantly faster
than their predecessors, and, in almost every case, are both lighter and stronger as well.
Throughout this ongoing evolutionary period, there has been a gradual and inevitable drying up of the once ubiquitous
“aircraft surplus” hardware. For quite awhile now, new and current specification aerospace hardware and fasteners have
been the name of the game, yet many are unfamiliar with the specifications and applications suitabilities.
The items stocked and sold by Coast Fabrication, Inc. have been tested and proven repeatedly at the highest levels of
professional competition to become the choice of knowledgeable builders and racers everywhere (they are currently used
and specified by every Formula 1 and INDYCAR team and constructor). In short, they offer the quality and performance
demanded in critical, highly-stressed applications.
As always, the aerospace industry continues to engineer and develop new and intriguing fasteners from new materials and
with new construction and manufacturing methods. For racing purposes, their cost alone makes them impractical. The AN
( Air Force/Navy), MS (Military Specification) and NAS (National Aerospace Standard) fasteners commonly used in racing
all originated 30 to 50 years ago. That the evolutions of these specifications are still in use for today’s military and civilian
aircraft fasteners is a testament to their lasting suitability and the rigid quality control standards they pioneered. The fact that
these basic fastener groups have remained the same for so long means that prices and availability are both reasonable.

2) The thread lengths for each series bolt are on the specification prints and in chart form on p. 29 for all sizes from #10–32
through 3/4–16.
3) In the commonly specified MS and NAS series bolts, the dash number is the grip in 1/16” (0.0625”) increments,
e.g. –18 = 18 x 0.0625” = 1.125” = 18/16”.
4) Thus, to determine the overall length of a bolt, simply add the thread length (for that series and diameter) to the grip
length you desire, e.g. NAS 1306–24: grip is 1.50” + threads: 0.578” = 2.078” overall length.
5) In AN series bolts, you must have a chart or bolt gauge to determine lengths, grips or part numbers.
THE DASH NUMBERS DO NOT INDICATE GRIPS OR OVERALL LENGTHS.
The Parts of a Bolt
The minimum load capacity is calculated at the area it will bear upon times (x) minimum bolt strength rating.
Shear Loads:
Calculate at minimum dimension for full (grip) diameter.
Example NAS1304: r = .1243; Area = π r2 = .049 square inches.
.049 square inches x 95,000 psi (shear rating) = 4655 lb @ full diameter; single shear
Tensile Loads:
Calculate at maximum pitch diameter: see chart on page 72
Example NAS1304: r = .1134; Area = π r2 = .0404 square inches.
.0404 square inches x 160,000 psi(tensile rating) = 6464 lb

Overall (underhead) length (± .015”) in each diameter is read at the intersection of diameter and grip length, e.g. MS21250-07040 = 3.241
HOW TO READ THE PART NUMBER:
MS21250-xxyyy * “xx” indicates Diameter; ** “yyy” indicates Grip Length
For example: MS21250-07040 MS21250-07040 = 7/16” Diameter MS21250-07040 = 40/16” = 2.5” Grip Length
GRIP LENGTH of bolts shall be measured from underside of head to the end of full cylindrical portion of the shank. DASH NO. indicates preferred lengths in 0.125” increments.

In most race car chassis and aircraft airframe applications, the bolts used are loaded in shear. The torque values
given in the NAS torque chart (opposite page) are adequate and appropriate for this type of usage. For aerospace bolt
applications subjected to high tensile loadings and for aerospace nuts and bolts matched to fasteners of other grades
and thread classes, see the notes below:
A) For applications requiring high installation torque values and using standard NAS bolts: achievable torque is
dependent on plating, length of thread engagement, class of mating threads and lubricant (if any). For maximum
fatigue resistance and clamping force in the bolted assembly, we want to produce a level of installed tensile stress that
is just below the yield strength of the bolt material (typically around 85% of the ultimate tensile strength). Achieving
this ensures that the stresses encountered in the assembly/tightening process will be the most the bolt ever sees. At
the yield point, the bolt will undergo “plastic” deformation (permanent stretch). Bolts for critical applications
should be test-torqued to determine the point of measurable permanent stretch. As a
rule, approximately 90% of this value will give the best performance in a bolted assembly.
Example: ’93 INDY-LOLA ring gear bolts NAS 1307-4H – with light lubrication, these bolts stretch permanently on a
consistent basis between 105 and 110 ft/lbs of installed torque. 90% of this value gives an assembly torque of 95 ft/lbs.
B) The mating of aerospace spec (MS•NAS•AN) bolts and nuts to fasteners of other specifications and thread classes
can cause problems. Nut splitting failures are primarily caused by overtorquing and/or thread class mismatches.
Generally, NAS wrenching torque values should be reduced when aerospace nuts are matched with non-aerospace
bolts or studs. Wrench torque values in the NAS nut tables below are achieved under laboratory conditions using
aerospace spec bolts (Class 3 threads) of higher strength than the nuts they are mated to. THE TABLES DO NOT
STATE, NOR SHOULD ONE INFER THAT THIS PERFORMANCE CAN BE DUPLICATED WITH OTHER TYPES
OF FASTENERS AND/OR CLASSES OF THREADS. For applications requiring high clamping forces, 12 point nuts
should be used whenever possible. Their greater thread contact area and higher rated strength make higher wrenching
torque values possible. As a general rule, the wrenching torque values for aerospace spec nuts
should be reduced approximately 25% as a starting point when these nuts are mated to
non-aerospace bolts or studs.

As we all learned in grade school, the washer’s basic function is to act as a load bearing face to prevent a bolt and/or
nut from digging into the surfaces of what is being clamped together. Washers also make good shims. Those listed
below are the most regularly specified.

Note: Although the MS20002 washer will fit over the shanks of standard NAS (1103/1303/6403 etc.) hexbolts, the
washer ID is small enough that it will usually “crash” with the bolt head-to-shank radius. DO NOT USE MS20002
WASHERS UNDER THE HEAD OF STANDARD NAS HEX BOLTS.
These high capacity, low torque, lightweight, close tolerance radial ball and roller bearings are in widespread use
in F1 and other top level motorsport series. Excellent for control of oscillatory motion, most have teflon seals and

A Cautionary Note:
These listed series bearings are currently manufactured by only three companies - RBC/Torrington/Fafnir, NHBB
Aerospace, and Schatz. All have long production lead times and, because not all of these listed series are current
“standards” in aircraft/aerospace, it is critical to confirm availability on parts before design-specifying. Also, we strongly
recommend procurring ample supplies of required items when available, as stock can appear and vanish from the open
market quite rapidly. Major price fluctuations are also not uncommon. We can hold stock and release over a period of up
to 6 months with your purchase order. Contact us for further details.

NOTES:
1. If the total thickness “G” is near the top of the thickness range given in the chart, then the next greater dash number is recommended.
2. Add .020” to “G” when using 99R10 Receptacle (single hole mount receptacle)
STUD
2. Determine “G” thickness per “Typical Installation Plus Flush Version” & “Typical Installation Flush Mounting
Version” illustrations below (also see following page, pg. 56). Note: Add maximum “D” dimension to “G” when
using plus flush grommets (i.e. 4002-N2, 4002-N, 4002-0, 4002-N3, 4002P3, 4002P4).
3. Use the “4002 Stud Selection Chart” below to determine the stud dash number (read dash number under
receptacle type) -or- measure existing stud, compare length in “40S5 Stud Lengths” chart below, and
determine the stud dash number.

1. The stud-nut (e.g. CA1820-1; CA1820-3) is retained with the top panel via a retaining ring
(CA18377; CA1825; CA1826-1).
2. The receptacle (CA18157: rivet on; CA18062: thread in) is mounted in the mating panel.
3. Spring-loaded ratchet plates in the receptacles lock the stud into place and resist vibration & loosening WITHOUT THE
NECESSITY OF PREVAILING TORQUE; as long as the stud-nut is engaged on the receptacle, it is locked into place.
Further tightening does not increase its strength or vibration resistance.
4. Rated Strength: 1,650lbs min Ultimate tensile strength
1,800lbs min Ultimate single shear strength thru shank
1,500lbs min Ultimate single shear strength thru recess
5. See illustrations below.
1. Since both the studs and receptacles employ “4 lead” threads, (#8-32 is the thread size for CA18157, CA18062, CA1820) each full
turn of a stud will produce 4 times the vertical thread displacement of a standard #8-32 bolt (e.g. studs will act as if they are #8-8: 8 full
turns travel equals 1 inch instead of 32 turns to travel 1 inch.
2. MAXIMUM ENGAGEMENT ON ANY STUD IS 1.75 TURNS; TYPICAL INSTALLATIONS SHOULD BE 1.5 TURNS OR LESS.
Remember: FURTHER TIGHTENING DOES NOT ADD TO STRENGTH OR VIBRATION RESISTANCE!
3. FACTORY RECOMMENDED TIGHTENING TORQUE IS 30 lb./in.
4. The factory recommends that the studs be selected so as not to exceed the grip length (“g” dimension in the chart) indication for each
size. Grips close to the maximum for a given stud dash number are sometimes better served with the next longer stud dash number.
Failures: Typically occur in receptacles; cracked, shattered, or broken ratchet plates, caused by (in declining order):

Coast Fabrication Inc currently offers two heat reflective tapes. Both of these tapes are lightweight, self-adhesive materials and
are currently used in F-1, Indy Cars, ALMS, etc. Material specification and “apples-to-apples” comparison tests between our
tapes and the corrugated “gold” material that is in universal circulation follow. All 3 tapes were applied to an aluminum panel
(0.063” 3003H14) and a constant heat source was fixtured at noted distance. Heat was applied to the front (tape) side and the
temperature was measured on the back side.

AeroCatch3, the latest addition to the AeroCatch family, offers an aerodynamic, high-strength tension latch for fastening
large panels together. The large shear tongue allows the latch to carry loads in 3 axes. Unlike competing products, the
AeroCatch3 requires no recessed pocket for installation - eliminating costly pocket molding in bodywork tooling. A simple
panel cut-out is all that is required for installation.
