MEET THE FLAMINGO
Many birds live in places that became too cold in winters. These birds prefer warmer places when winter comes. This is called
migration of birds. Flamingo a large bird which travels to India in winter months. They live in many parts of the world e.g. Europe,
South America and Africa.
From November to March they migrate to India. In March when summer begins the birds fly back. They live in large flocks.
When a flock of flamingo files in the sky, they look like giant pink clouds. Flamingo looks like a large white bird but when it opens
its wings, one can see its pink and black feathers. They have long legs and thin long neck. In water they can be seen standing on
one leg, which help them to nest when they feel tired. They are water birds, they like salt water and prefer to live near the sea.
Their beak act like a spoon with which they pink up little fish. Flamingos have a beak which is not like other birds.
They build nests near water, they collect wet mud and make a small hill of something in which they lay eggs. Their chicks
learn to fly when they are six months old.

Ans. Flamingos stand on one leg because they have to stand for a long time in water. Besides, by lifting and folding one leg at a
time give other leg a rest.
3. How does flamingo’s spoon shaped beak help it?
Ans. Its spoon shaped beak help it to pick up little fish and hold them.
Grammar Work:
ORDER OF ADJECTIVE:
Adjectives: The word which describe or tells us something about a noun.
We can use more than one adjective before a noun, but we have to be careful that it should be in order-
e.g 1. Look at that large, beautiful, pink bird. Large, beautiful and pink are adjectives and bird is a noun, so we are using three
adjectives before a noun and the same adjectives are in order.
e.g 2. Give me some fresh, green apples.
In this sentence fresh and green are adjectives and apples are noun. We have again used two adjectives before a
noun apples and these adjectives are in order. Words like fresh and green are telling us something about noun, so we
say these words are describing nouns.
Now look at the exercise on Page 109
2. They lovely blue bag belongs to me.
In this sentence lovely and blue are adjectives telling us something about noun – bag, and both lovely – blue are in order.
3. My ring has a tiny red shining stone.
tiny – Red – Shining adjectives in order
stone – Noun
4. Can I have one of these tasty brown chocolate bars?
tasty brown adjectives in order
chocolate bars noun.
5. That huge grey animal is a rhino.
huge grey adjectives in order.
animal – noun.
Words in communication – Prefix:
1. Fill now you have never heard of any such word like prefix –
Prefix – A letter or a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning. Such as un is added to happy and
the word becomes unhappy.
Comfortable – making one feel relaxed
Uncomfortable – not feeling relaxed.
Here we add un which is a prefix to comfortable and the meaning is changed.

Poem – Birds
Birds are a part of nature. There are thousands of birds and all vary in many respects from each other. The poem BIRDS is written
by ‘Meish Goldish’.
In this poem the poet has described the life of a bird, how hard it works while building its nest. It takes its own time to build the
nest and does not stop at all while building it. It takes care of its young ones after hatching. It keeps itself busy in feeding its
babies with worms. Poet it also referring about MIGRATION OF BIRDS. Birds flies to south when it gets cold, and when it gets
warm it returns back.
Go through the poem thoroughly and go through the following questions
1. What work does a bird do?
Ans. Birds builds its nest, hatches its eggs and feeds its babies.
2. What food does it feed the baby birds?
Ans. The food it feeds the baby birds are worms.

Doing words are called verbs.

2. Most action words that end in an e lose the e when we add ing for example.

Chapter Birbal’s Khichdi
Dear Students
“Birbal’s Khichdi” is a short story about Birbal and Akbar.
Before starting the lesson let me give you a small introduction about Birbal.
Birbal was the wisest man among Akbar’s court. He was considered one among the nine jewels of Akbar’s court. Birbal was very
clever, witty and an intelligent man.
“Birbal’s Khichdi” is a story based on Birbal’s wits and cleverness. It was a cold winter day Akbar and Birbal went for a walk along
the lake. A thought came to Birbal. The said to the king. “I think a man would do anything for money.” Akbar said “If you will find
such man than he has to spend a whole night in the cold lake for money.” Birbal found a man who was so poor and was ready to
do anything for money.
The man was asked to enter the lake where the water was as cold as ice. When the man was taken out by Guards, Akbar asked
poor man how he managed to spend the night in the cold lake. The poor man replied he kept his attention fixed on the street lamp.
On hearing this Akbar refused to give him a reward and said you survived because the street lamp kept you warm.
The poor man was disappointed and went to Birbal for help. Birbal thought of a plan to make the king realize that poor man
deserves reward. So Birbal hung a khichdi pot five feet above the fire. When king san this he said, “how will the khichdi cook, if it
is so for away from the fire. Birbal quickly replied and said, the same was the case with the poor man how was it possible for a
poor man to get warmth from the nearby street light.
The king realized his mistake and gave the poor man his reward.
Now go through the word meanings and learn them. Do the silent reading of the chapter, after understanding the chapter
thoroughly do the exercises A and B given on Page 98.

They are called question words. We use question words to ask questions. We put question words at the
beginning of a question. There is a question mark at the end of the sentence instead of a full stop.
Who is used for asking questions about person.
What is used for asking questions about things and sometimes what can also be used for person.
Where is used for asking questions about places.
When is used when you want to know about time.
Why is used when we want to learn the reason for something.
How is used when we want to know more about something or someone.
Exercise:
