Fifth Grade Syllabus

Dear Crescent Academy Parents and Guardians,

It is my pleasure to welcome you and your new or returning student to Crescent Academy!
I am very excited to begin a new school year with your fifth grader. I have many exciting
things planned for this coming year including a wide variety of field trips, in – school
activities, and many creative projects. Please keep this document as your guide to the
school year. It will answer many questions you may have and give you pertinent
information for your child’s success in fifth grade.

Classroom Schedule
We will be exploring all English Language Arts (reading, writing, and grammar), social
studies, math and science. Students will also have physical education, computers,
Spanish, and art throughout the week. A classroom and specials schedule will be passed
out to your student for his/her reference once everything is finalized. All subjects will
contribute to a well – rounded student and a successful fifth grade education at Crescent.

Fifth Grade Expectations

Students are expected to come to school ready to work. This includes having the proper
supplies and proper attire. Respect for all should always be exhibited.

Classroom Rules
Our classroom will create a culture of respect and acceptance of each and every student
in our classroom. For that to happen there will be classroom rules and expectations to
reinforce that all students are welcome to share their ideas without harsh criticism. To
foster this environment, our rules are:

1. Everyone stays in their seats.

2. Everyone raises their hands.
3. Everyone follows directions.
4. Everyone is respectful.
5. Everyone cleans up the room.
6. Everyone is prepared.

Parent-Teacher Contact
At particular points during the school, I may require parent signatures on tests,
assignments or in-class activities that we feel are integral to your child’s development.
The 5th Grade Team requires these signatures in order to maintain an open line of
communication between teachers and parents. Please be aware that these may be
coming home throughout the school year. As always, I am aware that there may be
extenuating circumstances. In this case, please do not hesitate to call, email, or write a
letter to make me aware. Take Home folders will be distributed every week and must
be returned with your signature the following morning. In these Take Home folders, you
will find a Progress Report and/or a Missing Assignment Report that requires a
SEPARATE signature. These must be returned with the folder on following morning. Grade
points will be given for positive parent – teacher communication with regards to these
assignments, agendas and Take Home folders. Parents will also be granted access to our
online Grade Book for you to view your student’s progress. I update grades DAILY so you
can log in as frequently as you would like to see progress and/or missing assignments.
Each classroom has a designated area that is labeled “MISSING WORK” that the student
may turn in missing work as indicated on their “Missing Assignment Report”.

Behavior Plan

All students will be held to high standards in terms of classroom behaviors. If students
choose to partake in behaviors which hinder the academic environment, they will be held
accountable for each of these behaviors every week. Both positive and negative
behaviors will be recorded using a Behavior Clip Chart. If a student makes a choice that
interferes with the classroom learning they will be issued a warning. If the behavior
continues, students will be given a Behavior Report Form that will require a parent
signature, Weekly Behavior Notices will go home to show students progress. These
Behavior Notices will need to be signed by a parent or guardian and returned the following
week. If Behavior Notices are NOT returned the following week, students will receive
phone calls home and possible consequences. All of the guidelines set forth in the
Crescent Academy Parent/Student Handbook, can be found online at
www.crescentacademycharterschool.com.

Reward System

Students who are consistently on task or showing exceptional effort in the classroom
should be rewarded. We will be using a program called Class Dojo that will give students
positive or negative points for behavior. More information about Class Dojo will be handed
out soon. The class as a whole can also be rewarded when we are showing teamwork
(cleaning up, helping one another, etc.), when we are complimented by another staff
member (walking quietly in the hallway, at a special, etc.), or other positive group
behaviors.

Homework/Absent Work

Crescent Academy upholds high academic expectations.

Students may be given homework five days a week, dependent upon the nature of the
activities. Please be expecting to see this homework come home. At the end of each
quarter students are allowed a “window” to turn in any missing assignments. Other than
this “window” we will not accept late work.

The Late Work Policy is below:

~1 day late: 10% off grade

~2 days late: 50% off grade
~3 days or more: No Credit Given

*Extra Credit WILL NOT be assigned to any subject in which the student has missing or
late work.

If a student becomes hospitalized or has an illness to keep him/her home for an extended
time, the parents should call the school office and arrange for assignments from the
teachers. Upon return, the student must have a doctor’s excuse. For every day a student
is absent, he/she has that number of days to make up missing work. For example, if a
student is absent Monday and Tuesday, all work is due that Friday.

If a student misses assignments, projects, quiz or test previously assigned before

student’s absence; student is required to have dated assignments complete and be
prepared for any projects, quizzes or test previously assigned.

If a student is absent on scheduled test, quizzes, major projects, etc., the student must
bring in signed letter from guardian explaining absence upon return.

If absent, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange time to meet with teacher and
receive missing class work and homework.

No make-up work will be given beyond these measures unless there are
extenuating circumstances. In this situation, please contact me directly.

ALL HOMEWORK AND CLASSWORK SHOULD BE DONE IN PENCIL, UNLESS TOLD

OTHERWISE. MATH HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IF WRITTEN IN PEN. NO
EXCEPTIONS!!!

Grading Scale

A+ 100-96.5 B+ 89.4-86.5 C+ 79.4-76.5 D+ 69.4-66.5

A 96.4-93.5 B 86.4-83.5 C 76.4-73.5 D 66.4-63.5
A- 93.4-89.5 B- 83.4-79.5 C- 73.4-69.5 D- 63.4-59.5

Any student receiving a grade below 59.5 will receive an "F" or an "incomplete."

Weighting of Grading

The 5 categories being weighted to determine final grades is as follows:

Project (30% of final grade)

Class work/Quiz (30% of final grade)
Test (20% of final grade)
Class Participation (10% of final grade)
Homework (10% of final grade)

Within each category, assignments are scored and graded on a standard point system
based off how many points each teacher makes their assignments worth. For example, if
a student receives an assignment with a max possible score of 10 and he/she scores 9,
they would receive 90% (A-) for that assignment.

Field Trips
The fifth graders will be taking sever field trips throughout the year to promote further
learning and gain new experiences. Students who have received three Behavioral Notices
and/or referrals in one month will not be allowed to participate in the field trip for that
month. Please be aware that this is up to the teacher and administration discretions. I
truly feel that each field trip scheduled is relevant to our curriculum and a necessary part
to a well – rounded fifth grade experience. We are happy to have parents that would like to
volunteer their valuable time to chaperone on these trips. More information regarding field
trips will be sent home as they are planned. If you are interested in being a chaperone,
please contact me directly.

Reading Logs

Students will be assigned a reading log every month. The log will list the days for the
week, and the student should be reading each day. Please record the time that they read
on these logs. These logs are to be kept for the course of the month and will be returned
with a parent signature on the due date posted on the reading log. These reading logs are
a LARGE part of their reading grade and MUST be returned.

Water Bottles & Snacks

Students are welcome to bring water bottles and refill them at the drinking fountain. This
will lessen classroom disruptions and maintain a productive learning environment.
Students may also bring in one health snack to be eaten during the designated snack
time. Examples of healthy snacks include: fruit, vegetables, crackers, granola bars,
pretzels, etc. Please no chips of any kind, cookies, candy or any unhealthy snacks, as
these will not be allowed in the room.

*Please no nut products or seeds, as we may have students with allergies*

Bathroom Breaks

Students will be allowed to use the restroom during their designated restroom time. In
cases of a restroom emergency, I ask that students do their best to use the restroom at
appropriate times during the day, such as between activities or during snack time.
Students WILL NOT be allowed to use the restroom in the middle of lesson as it may
interfere with time.

Cell Phone Policy

Crescent Academy has a strict NO CELL PHONE Policy. Any student that is caught with a
cell phone will automatically have it confiscated. The cell phone will be turned into
administration and a parent will have to come and pick it up from the school. School
phones are available in the classroom or office in times of needed communication. This is
a policy that is more clearly defined in the Crescent Academy Parent Handbook.
