condition and show no action. These words are known as state-of-
being verb. The most common state-of-being verbs are: am, is, are,

Verbs do not always stand alone. Often we combine state-of-being verbs with
action verbs to form verb phrases. A phrase is two or more words serving as
one part of speech. A word is one of the parts of speech.
Other special verbs called “helping verbs” may be combined into verb
phrases. Common helping words are: can, could, do, did, does, have, has,
had, may, might, might, ought, shall, will
