PREFACE
About Linear B
Linear B is a syllabic script that was used for writing Mycenaean Greek. It pre-dated the Greek
alphabet (ca. 13th but perhaps as early as 17th century BC) and seems to have died out with the
fall of Mycenaean civilization. Most clay tablets inscribed in Linear B were found in Knossos,
Cydonia (modern Chania), Pylos, Thebes and Mycenae. The application of Linear B seems to
have been confined to administrative contexts by some sort of guild of professional scribes who
served the central palaces. The succeeding period provides no evidence of the use of writing.
Linear B has roughly 200 signs, divided into around 87 syllabic signs with phonetic values and
ideograms with semantic values. The grid was developed during decipherment by Michael
Ventris and John Chadwick. Each syllable is represented by a consonant and a vowel (with some
exceptions shown below). In cases where the transcription remains in doubt, Bennett's number
with an asterisk is used.
Spelling and pronunciation
Linear B does not distinguish between short and long vowels or voiced and unvoiced consonants.
For example, the syllabogram can both represent /ε/and /ε/ (as the first and the second /e/ in
the word ‘even’ respectively). The syllabogram can both represent /θα,/ /γα,/ and /ρα/ (/ka,/
/gha,/ /ha/ respectively).
It does not distinguish between /ξ/ and /ι/ (/r/ and /l/ respectively). For example, ‘ti-ri-
po’= ‘tripous’ but ‘tu-ri-so’= ‘Tylisos.’
The w-series represent the lost letter /F/ (digamma). It is pronounced as /β/ or /θ/ (/v/ or
/f/ respectively). In modern Greek it is usually expressed with a ‘consonantal’ /u/. For example,
‘αυγό’= ‘avgo’ but ‘αυηόο’= ‘aftos.’
The q-series represent the lost letter /q/ (qoppa). It could sound like /θF/ or /γF/ (/kF/ or
/gF/ respectively) but it evolved as /θ,/ /π,/ /η/ (/k,/ /p,/ /t/ respectively) voiced or unvoiced. For
example, ‘i-qo’=> ‘ίπ(π)νο’= ‘ip(p)os,’ ‘qa-si-re-u’=> ‘βαζηιεύο’= ‘vasileus,’ ‘qe’=> ‘τε/γε’=
(‘te/ghe’).
The spelling of words is analytical, which means that all syllables are expressed. But
since the syllables are basically consonant- vowel pairs, additional letters are omitted. For
example, ‘pe-ma’= ‘sperma,’ ‘ka-ko’= ‘khalkos,’ etc. Equivalently, in clusters of consonants that
are fully expressed, redundant vowels are omitted. For example ‘a-mi-ni-so’= ‘Amnisos,’ ‘a-to-
ro-qo’= ‘anthropos,’ and so on. Of course, the ambiguous nature of the script is in some cases
incurable, as for example the word ‘te-mi’= ‘termis’ and ‘themis,’ or ‘a-pi-qo-ro’= ‘amfipolos’
and ‘amfiplous,’ etc. This ambiguity gets worse when suffixes are to be expressed. For example,
‘to-so’ can be either ‘tosos’ or ‘toson,’ even ‘tosoi,’ ‘tosois,’ etc.

Examples of conjugation
Names are usually constructed with the /s/ suffix that can also be accompanied with a vowel
(/os,/ /as/ etc). Female names usually end in /a/> /ε/ and neutrals end in /on/. This holds for the
nominative. Verbs end in /-mi/ and /σ/ (in the active voice) or /-mai/ (in the passive voice).
Examples:
All symbolism follows standard convections. For example, an asterisk (*) before a word implies
a reconstructed form of the word that is not originally attested in the texts. The structure of the
lexicon is simple: Symbols- Transliteration- Pronunciation- Translation. The languages used in
each case are the appropriate ones for a better understanding of the texts.
However, I haven’t followed the standard interpretation of /F/ or /q/ since their sound
depends on the context. For example, ‘e-ke-ra2-wo’= ‘Eheliafon,’ not ‘Eheliawon,’ which would
be pronounced ‘Eheliayouon.’ I have done the same with other sounds too. For example, I write
‘ka-ko’= ‘χαιθόο’ (‘halkos’) and not ‘khalkos,’ because the corresponding letter /ρ/ is a simple
consonant. Finally, I have kept some conventions concerning ‘common cases,’ for example, ‘po-
ro-te-u’= ‘Proteus’ which, however, is to be pronounced ‘Protefs’ and not ‘Proteous.’ As one soon
realizes, the most authentic spelling rule is the empirical one.
