Anticipatory Set: Pair students up and give students exactly 35 dried noodles. Tell the
students to make groups with seven noodles in each group
● How can grouping help find a total number of objects?
● How can these groups of noodles be used for multiplication?
Objective/Purpose: By the end of this lesson students will be able to demonstrate how
grouping whole numbers represents multiplication.
● I can place a certain amount of objects into groups
● I can show how whole number can be grouped to find a product
Input:
1. Grouping: grouping a whole number into smaller numbers to add easier
2. Repeated Addition: adding the same number over and over again
3. “Groups Of”: Multiply
Model: Using a smartboard we would teach this lesson by showing students the
comparison between multiplying and grouping numbers. Multiplying number requires
more high level math fact, and grouping is a simple way to repeatedly add numbers to
find a product. We will also use a google slide to show definitions and examples of how
these two methods are the same.
Closure: Give each student a bag of 40 noodles. The student must demonstrate how
many noodles will go into 5 groups. Have student write a multiplication problem that
supports their grouping.
Independent Practice:
ixl is a sufficient website to help students determine the amount of objects that are in
each group.
Worksheets can help students practice how to draw the groups and objects in each
group. Students will also learn how to problem solve because they may draw the
groupings backwards and with teacher guidance have to fix their mistakes.
