MIT SPOT ABRASIVE & SODA BLASTING JUN 2017
ISSUE FOR COMMENT
1 Introduction
1.1 Mini Integrity Team (MIT) is 2-3 men team uses IBIX portable blasting pot or equivalent for spot abrasive
blasting (optional for wet blasting) or soda blasting.
1.2 Spot Abrasive Blasting
a Abrasive blast corroded surface for recoating or cold work repair, e.g. fabric & cold bond repair.
b Use Jotun Smart Pack coating system or equivalent with paint brush or roller.
c The equivalent Jotun Smart Pack paint are subjected to EMEPMI review and approval.

ATTACHMENT 1 - IBIX Portable Blaster & Water Sprayer Specification
IBIX portable blaster is a double functional (dry and wet) cleaning tool. It uses garnet and sodium Bicarbonates to
clean metal surface. Garnet is capable to create surface profile but not for sodium Bicarbonates. Recommended
model for Mini Integrity Team is IBIX 9 H20. Contractor may use other IBIX model to suit the work.

ATTACHMENT 2 - MIT PPE Requirement
(Feb 16, 2016)
CONTRACTOR may use the full blasting suit PPE for MIT but it will limit mobility and affect productivity.
Alternative CONTRACTOR may use the simplified PPE here. EMEPMI Medicine & Occupational Health (MOH)
has tested IBIX portable blaster and the minimal recommended PPE are
1 Seal goggles
2 3M half face mask respirators 6500 series or equivalent with N95 particulate filter. CONTRACTOR may
use P95 or P100 filter
3 Hard hat c/w chin strap, face shield & double hearing protection
Altenative, CONTRACTOR may use 3M full facepiece respirator 6000 series or equivalent with hard hat c/w
chin strip & double hearing protection.
Coverall, safety shoe and hand gloves are the base PPE requirement offshore.

ATTACHMENT 2 - MIT FAQ
(15.1.16, Rev. 5)
1 General
1.1 Do I need to abrasive blast and paint pitting?
Yes to get longer coating service life and prevent corrosion holes to form. Pitting is a localized corrosion having
rust scales that creates corrosion holes very fast on a steel. See Photo 4.
1.3 Do I need to abrasive blast and paint new pitting found adjacent to pitting in the Handover?
Yes although the Handover does not capture the new pitting. Document number of new pitting in the Daily
Progress Report & mark-up the new pitting in the layout drawing.
1.4 Do I need to sweep blast and square the paint area next to a pitting or multiple pittings?
Yes. Sweep blast shall remove all the loose paint and rust scale adjacent to the pittings. However tightly
adhered paint is permitted to remain. See Photo 2, 4.
1.6 Do I need to abrasive blast and paint corrosion holes for non-piping in the Handover?
Yes to stop corrosion and structural failure, and defer repair. See Photo 5, 6.
1.9 Do I paint when steel surface to be painted is less than 3C above the Dew Point?
No the paint will not dry. At rule of thumb, do not paint if the steel temperature is less than 26°C or consult
Technical. Dew point is the temperature at which the air can no longer hold it's water vapour and start to
condensate. Dew Point depends on the ambient temperature and Relative Humidity.

Quality is everyone responsibility. If you see quality issue, ask the person at site and correct it immediately.
You may contact Technical. There are four (4) levels of QC. Level 1 QC is by MIT. Level 2 QC is by Contractor
supervisor/foreman. Level 3 QC is by EMCo CS/PS. Level 4 QC is by Technical V&V.
2
1.14 Do I need to increase pitting count from 1 to 2 if painted area is more than 0.2 m ?
Yes, typical painted area for 1 pitting is 0.1 m2. Pitting count is 3 if painted area is 0.3m2 and so on.
2.2 Do I abrasive blast and paint LSE supports and handrail first before piping?
Yes to familiar with platform requirements and this work requires less protection.
2.3 Do I need to wear safety harness to abrasive blast and paint outboard LSE support and handrail?
Yes.
3.2 What should I do if I see leak when I remove thick rust scale on pitting piping?
Immediately stop work and make safe situation, including shutting down equipment and production as required.
Inform Supervisor and/or Operator. Consult Technical to check piping pressure rating before sealing the hole
either using Rapp-It or pipe wrap. Typically this happens for very low or atmospheric pressure piping. The hole
was formed and sealed by thick rust scale.
