Pillai
Rao Sahib T.T.Rathnasabapathy Pillai was born on 5th April 1897.
Affectionately known to his admires and friends as TTR he made his mark in the legal profession by sheer dint of his industry and intellect. For almost 3 decades he rode the Courts of Coimbatore as a colossus! An exceptionally talented lawyer, his tongue coated with silver made musical sounds of effective and convincing arguments before the British Judges as they nodded their heads at his wonderful mastery over the English language. The public life of Coimbatore was made gay cheerful by his presence. He was involved in every public organisation of Coimbatore and always gave his wise counsel and guidance to every one who approached him. He was a man of unsuilled character and stainless integrity, his capacity for love and devotion as a friend was unequalled. With a transparent sincerity, he delighted in obliging a friend and offering a helping hand to any one in distress. From 1937 to 1949, almost for 12 years he was Public Prosecutor of Coimbatore and Nilgiris District. The then British India Government for the services he had rendered chose to honour him by the title “Rao Sahib”. At the break of IInd World War he helped the British India Government in its War efforts by serving in the war Committee to collect funds.
In the field of finance he was an unquestioned wizard, with a degree of
intuition that is rate in the extreme he had a capacity to assess with the uncanny accuracy the impact of economic and political factors that affect the rise and fall of the financial markets. He invested in stock markets and made huge fortunes. He was in vited by almost all the giant joint stock Companies in South India to be in their Board. The Madras Share Holders Association described him at the condolence meeting to mourn his death as “ The name TTR Pillai is not only a household name in Coimbatore but to many investors in companies who always read with interest the very many useful and instructive articles contributed by him to newspapers and periodicals. As a Citizen of India, he often expressed his views with courage and never failed to convey these even to the highest quarters”. He was a bundle of multifarious talents, developed and polished by unstinted industry and unremitting preserverance. He was as much as a student of literature as he was of finance. His command of the English language was copious and powerful. His capacity to sway his listeners and his ability to bring them into his line of thought was surprising and astonishing to those who watched! He highlighted and magnified his talents in the eyes of the world by a powerful eloquence that is characteristic of him.

He was the Vice-President of Indian Red Cross Society, Guild of Service and Bharat Scouts and Guides. He was a committee member of the Social Worker’s Conference, Coimbatore and the Discharged Prisoners Aid Society, Coimbatore. He was the Honorary Secretary of SPCA., Coimbatore Branch. He died on 14th March 1968, but he has left foot prints of sincerity, magnamity dedication and greatness in the sands of time.
