Question 1: Confidence Intervals (10 Marks)

PART I (3 Marks)

The state highway department is studying traffic patterns on one of the busiest highways in the state.
As part of the study, the department needs to estimate the average number of vehicles that pass an
intersection each day. A random sample of 64 days gives us a sample mean of 14,205 cars and a
sample standard deviation of 1,010 cars. Compute the 99% confidence interval for the mean number
of cars passing the intersection

PART II (7 Marks)

In the most recent fiscal year, the Whole Foods for Natural Grocery needed to estimate the population
means sales dollars per square foot. For this purpose, the following data (sales dollars per square foot)
were collected for a random sample of 10 Whole food supermarkets.

854, 858, 801, 892, 849, 807, 894, 863, 829, 815.

Compute each of the following:

1) The sample mean. (1 mark)


2) The sample Standard deviation. (3 marks)
3) The 95% confidence interval for the population mean. (3 marks)

Question 2: Simple Linear Regression Analysis: (10 Marks)

PC World provided details for ten of the most economical laser printer (PC World, April 2013). The
following data show the maximum printing speed in pages per minute (ppm) and the price (in Euros
including 15 per cent value added tax) for each printer.

4) What does the correlation coefficient tell you about the relationship between speeds and price?
