Rabbit Psoas Muscle Lab Report
What happened to the muscle after the ATP (only) reagent was added, salts only, or
ATP and salts? Did the muscle contract? How do you know? Why or why not (did the
muscle contract)?
The muscles contracted. Visual evidence for this is the muscles shortened, the first one
and third shortened quite a bit but the second one shortened only a few millimeters.
In this lab we used the microscope and examined changes that took place when certain
treatment/reagent were added to rabbit psoas muscle fibers. The treatment/reagent
caused contraction, inhibited contraction to occur, or had no effect on the sarcomeres at
all. We used Rabbit Psoas muscle and this muscle was a good model to use for this lab
since the fibers are long and straight. Also one other advantage was that there were not
a lot of connective tissues connecting the muscle fibers together.
