When Dr. Kalam was with DRDO, his team was once discussing options
to secure the perimeter of a building that needed protection. Once
suggestion was to put broken glass on the wall. Dr. Kalam immediately
rejected the suggestion and said: If we do that, birds will not be able to
perch on the wall.

After his tenure as President, Dr.Kalam was the Chief Guest for
convocation of IIT-Varanasi. There were five chairs on the stage, the
centre one being for Dr. Kalam, the other four designated for the top
university officials. Noticing his chair being bigger in size than the others,
Dr. Kalam refused to sit on it and offered the Vice Chancellor to sit in
stead. Soon another similar chair was made available immediately for
the Honourable former President.

When Dr.Kalam visited Trivandrum, Kerala for the first time after
becoming President, he was entitled to invite anyone as the Presidential
Guests to the Raj Bhavan of Kerala. Dr.Kalam used the opportunity to
invite a road side cobbler and owner of a very small hotel. Both of them
were his acquaintances during his tenure as a scientist in Trivandrum.
He used the opportunity to meet the two people as he was unable to get
in touch with them after becoming the President.

During a significant and tense project of the DRDO, a scientist
approached his boss Dr. Kalam and asked to leave early that day since
he had promised his children to take them to an exhibition. Dr.Kalam
generously granted the permission and the scientist got back to work.
When he did, he lost the track of time and forgot to leave early. He
reached home, feeling guilty, and looked for his kids, but could not find
them in home. He asked his wife for the kids, and to his utter surprise
she told him: Dr.Kalam was here around 5 PM and he took the kids for
the exhibition!. Apparently, Dr. Kalam had been observing the scientist

The JCI Active Citizen Framework is a methodology for running

sustainable, needs-based projects that create measurable

are formulated to address the communitys core needs and
their root causes. Collaborators outline a project plan including
goals, actions and desired outcomes. Solutions target three
integrated stages of community development that drive a
community toward prosperity.
3. Execute - Take Action
Once the need and root cause have been identified, active
citizens take action by mobilizing resources, rallying support
and implementing the project plan. By combining resources,
the community is enabled to achieve even greater sustainable
