RequirementsofCO2Room:
InCO2floodingsystem,carbondioxidebottlesareplacedinaseparateroom.Therequirementsforlocation,
accessibility,useandventilationofCO2storagespacesasperIMOare:
Spacesforstorageofcylindersortanksforextinguishinggasshouldnotbeusedforotherpurposes.
Thesespacesshouldnotbelocatedinfrontoftheforwardcollisionbulkhead.
Accesstothesespacesshouldbepossiblefromtheopendeck.
Spacessituatedbelowthedeckshouldbedirectlyaccessiblebyastairwayorladderfromtheopendeck.
Thespaceshouldbelocatednomorethanonedeckbelowtheopendeck.
Spaceswhereentrancefromtheopendeckisnotprovidedorwhicharelocatedbelowdeckaretobefittedwith
mechanicalventilation.
Theexhaustduct(suction)shouldbeleadtothebottomofthespace.
Suchspacesshouldbeventilatedwithatleast6airchangesperhour.
COroomsafetyarrangement:
1.Exhaustfan,andsuctionductisprovidedatthebottomoftheroom.AnyaccumulatedCOfromleakageatthe
bottomcanbeexhaustedtoatmosphere.
2.CableoperatedSafetyValveisfittedonPilotCylinderdischargeline.
ItpreventsaccidentaldischargeofCOfromQuickReleaseCylindersduetoactionof
leakagegasfromPilotCylinder.
3.ReliefValvesarefittedoneachdischargelinefromcylinderssothatleakagegascansafelydisposeto
atmosphere.
4.CheckValveisfittedinconnectionpipebetweeneachcylinderdischargevalveandmanifold,sothatleakageof
onecylindercannoteffectothercylinder.
5.EachbottlehasacombinedBurstingDisc,whichwillrupturespontaneouslyatapressureof177barat63C.
6.PressureGaugeandpressureAlarminthemanifold.
MaintenanceofCOfloodingsystem:
1.Weeklyinspectionforalarmsystem.
2.Bottlesshouldbeweighedyearlylevelcheckedbyultrasonicorradioactiveisotopedetector.Levelreference
markshouldbeprovided.If10%lossofweight,rechargethem.
3.Allthepulley,wire,ropeandtogglemustbefreefromdirt,scalesandwelllubricated.
4.CObranchpipeanddischargenozzleshouldbeclearedwithcompressairattwoyearinterval.
5.Bottlesshouldnotbeexposedtotemperatureof60C.

WeighingofCObottle:
1.Bottlesshouldbeweighedyearlybyspecialweighingdevicedesignedforthispurpose.
2.Ithasareferencemarktodetermine10%lossofweight.
COQuantityCalculation:(byRegulation):
Forcargospace,COquantityshallbesufficienttogiveaminimumvolumeoffreegas,equalto30%of
grossvolumeoflargestcargospacesoprotected.
Formachineryspace,COquantityshallbesufficienttogiveaminimumvolumeoffreegas,equalto40%
ofgrossvolumeofmachineryspacesoprotectedexcludingthecasing.
So,ifweightofCO/bottle=45kg/bottleandFreegasvolumeofCO=0.56m/kg.then,RequiredCO
bottlesforcargospace=(0.3xLargestcargospacegrossvolume)/(0.56X45)
and
RequiredCObottlesformachineryspace=(0.4xMachineryspacegrossvolume)/(0.56X45)
MachinerySpace(EngineRoom)CO2FloodingProcedure:
CO2SystemoperationinMachinerySpaces:
ACo2systemofmachineryspacesconsistsofabankofCo2bottlesthatcanbeoperatedfromaremoteplace
locatedawayfromthemachineryspaces.ThesystemalsoconsistsofpilotCo2cylinderswhichcontrolthe
activationofthebankofCo2bottles.ThePilotcylindersarecontainedinacontrolboxandarenormallykept
disconnected.Thesystemisconnectedtothepilotcylindersandthecontrolboxwiththehelpofsteelwiresor
flexiblepipes.Allthesepipesarefittedwithaquickactioncoupling.
Whenthesystemistobeactivated,thecouplinginpluggedintothecorrespondingsocket.Thevalvesofthe
pilotcylinderswillbeopenedwiththehelpoftheleversinthemainCO2controlsystem.

TheCO2fromthepilotcylinderswillopenthesystemsmainstopvalve.
ThemainstopvalvehasapistonwhichgetsdepressedduetotheCo2gaspressureandallowsthepilotgasto
flowtothebankofCO2cylinders.
Thispilotgasoperatesthecylindersvalves.Allthesevalveshaveanactuatorwhichgetsoperatedbythepilot
pressure.
Thedetectionoffireisdonebyvarioussensorsinstalledinthemachineryspaces.Thoughtheopeningof
controlboxoperatesanalarm,themaindecisionforCO2floodingistakenbytheChiefengineer,afterdue
consultationwiththemasteroftheship.
BeforereleasingCo2intothefireaffectedspace,itshouldbemadesurethateverybodyisoutoftheplaceand
totalheadshouldbecounted.
Theplaceisfullyenclosedi.eallskylights&ventilatorsareclosedairtightandpumpsumpssupplyingfueloil
shouldalsobestoppedinordertopreventreignition.
Separateleversforeachandeveryspacearepresentinsidethemaincontrollingcabinet.Theoperatingofa
particularleveractivatesthepilotbottles,whichhelpsinreleasingthecompletebankofbottlesdesignatedfor
thatplace.
Withtheopeningofthemastervalve,Co2isfloodedinsidethefireaffectedspace,whichthensmothersthe
firewiththehelpofblanketeffect.
Boundarycoolingshouldbecarriedout.

Inordertocheckwhethertheextractorisextractingsamplesfromtheholds,asmallindicatorpropelleris
fitted,whichensuresthatthesamplesaretaken.
