Effective vertical stress due to self weight of soil

Is given by:

v = v u where, v = sat x z
= (sat - w) x z u = w x z
= x z sat = saturated unit weight
w = water unit weight, 9.81 kN/m3
z = depth
= buoyant unit weight of the soil

In the absence of data on water level or reliable water table, the in-situ pore water
pressure, u is often not taken into consideration.

Therefore, total vertical stress, v = sat x z

Example: Dia. 72mm x 144mm length sample ( volume = 586.29 cm3 )

at depth 6.0 metres, with a wet weight of 1170 gms

Bulk density, = Mass = 1170 g = 1.996 Mg/m3 (1.996 g/cc)

Volume 586.29 cc
3
Unit weight of soil in kN/m can be obtained from densities in Mg/m3 as
sat = g 2
( g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.81m/sec )
= 1.996 x 9.81
= 19.58 kN/m3

Total vertical stress, v = 19.58kN/m x 6.0m = 117 kN/m
