PSL Draft week took a strong start on Monday, December 21 st

Shahid Afridi the first player to be chosen amongst 10 BBL players on the
opening day
Pakistan Super League will be hosted in Sharjah and Dubai from the 4 th of February
to the 23rd of February. The local players that are picked up as supplementary, may
or may not be called up for the respective teams. Their contract will only be
enforced the day they join their team at the venue.
The entire format of PSL consisted of 310 players that were each divided into 5
categories (Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver and Emerging) relative to their value in
the international cricket, ascending from $10,000 for the Emerging players to
$140,000 for the Platinum players. Every team had to pick 3 players from the
Platinum, Diamond and Gold category, while they had to choose 2 from the
emerging category.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) started off by picking up Platinum, Diamond and
Gold categories on Monday, while the players in the Silver and Emerging categories
were inducted in the five franchises yesterday. Each team will feature a minimum of
4 foreign players.
It was no surprise that Pakistans Twenty20 captain, Shahid Afridi, was the first pick
on the day on Monday. He was quickly picked up by Peshawar Zalmi, who traded
their selection with Islamabad before the draft opening to get the allrounder. Shoaib
Malik was the other Pakistani allrounder that was bagged as an icon player by
Karachi.
Quetta Gladiators were successful in bagging up the England star performer Kevin
Peterson. But the most interesting pick was that of West Indian powerhouse Chris
Gayle. Muhammad Amir will return to the scene and is picked up by Karachi as soon
as he was available.
Islamabad United were able pick up Australian allrounder Shane Watson. The other
Australian that is picked up is the former Australian wicketkeeper for Tests and ODIs
Brad Haddin. This Australian duo are currently playing in the KFC Big Bash League
and will join their teams in the first edition of PSL.
In some other major signings, Karachi bagged Bangladeshs Shakib Al Hasan,
Lahore Qalandars picked up the leading wicket taker of IPL 2015 Dwayne Bravo,
Islamabad pocketed the player of the tournament of IPL 2015 Andre Russell and
Peshawar went for the West Indian winning captain of World T20 Darren Sammy.
The sale of commercial rights for title sponsorship, broadcast and franchises has
already been finalized by Pakistan Super League.
PCB said in a statement that a draft system was favored over a player auction to
ensure a level playing field because each team had to choose a particular number
of players from every category. As a result, every team spent an equal amount in
drafting players. That is why all five teams will feature top players.
