CA 3703 CONSTRUCTION METHODS & EQUIPMENT

Question 1

The following figures are detailed drawings for element welding

connections, all the dimensions are given in mm:

(a) State the welding methods in Figures (1) and (2)


(b)Explain the meaning of the symbol 50-100 in Figure (1)
(c) Explain the meaning of the symbol 10 and 30 0 in Figure (2)
(d) Explain the meaning of the symbol "o" in Figure (3)
(e) What is the effective throat thickness of welding in Figure (4)
Solutions:

(a) Figure (1): fillet welds. Figure (2):


groove welds.

(b) 50-100 indicates that 50mm long welds


having a space 100mm between two
adjoining centers.

(c) Figure (2) indicates single-v welded


from one side having 10mm in rooting
opening and the groove angle is 300, while
there is a backing bar on another side.

(d) It means weld all around.

(e) The effective throat thickness e can be

determined by: sin45 = 8 , then e=5.6(mm)
