3. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. Place bead trim along the bottom of the ap, with the beads
facing into the ap. Snap on your zipper foot, and stitch the trim down the center of the ribbon. Stitch again,
just off the edge of the ribbon. This row of stitching is your guide for sewing the ap front to the lining.
4. Place ap right sides together with lining on cotton batting. With the embroidered ap up, sew across the
bottom following the stitching line. Check to be sure none of the ribbon is showing. Snap on your regular
foot. Sew the remaining two sides, leaving 3 opening for turning on one of the sides. The top is left open.
Turn, press.
5. Select right needle position. Thread with Sulky 12 wt. Blendable thread on top and sewing thread in the
bobbin. Topstitch the ap, guiding the edge of the foot on the edge of the ap.

Fractured Patchwork:
1. Sew the 3 wide strips together as shown.

2.

Cut them apart randomly as shown.

3. Reverse every other one and sew them back together,

offsetting the seams slightly.

4.

Cut apart through the middle at an angle.

5. Stitch one side to one of the 1 wide strips. Stitch

the other half to the other side of the 1 wide strip.
Press.
6. Repeat, cutting several more times, and insetting the
1 wide strips. Press.

Thread with 12 wt. cotton Blendable thread on top and sewing thread in the bobbin.
8. Stitch random stippling over the fractured patchwork.
9. Steam press lightly. Cut into two 12 squares.
Outer Pocket:
1. Embroider 921002 on tone on tone solid. Cut down to 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 with embroidery centered.
2. Thread with sewing thread top and bobbin. Place bead trim along the bottom of the
pocket with the beads facing into the pocket. Snap on your zipper foot and stitch the
trim down the center of the ribbon. Stitch again, just off the edge of the ribbon. This
row of stitching is your guide for sewing the pocket front to the lining.
3. Place pocket right sides together with pocket lining on cotton batting. With the embroidered pocket up, sew
across the bottom following the stitching line. Check to be sure none of the ribbon is showing. Snap on your
regular foot. Sewround the remaining three sides, leaving 3 opening for turning on one of the sides (not the
top). Turn, press. Insert Steam-A-Seam 2 in the opening and press with steam to fuse.
4. Center the pocket on one of the fractured patchwork squares. Select right needle position. Thread with Sulky
12 wt. Blendable thread on top and sewing thread in the bobbin. Topstitch the pocket in place, guiding the
edge of the foot, on the edge of the pocket.

Purse front and back:

1. Place the purse front (without the outer pocket) and the lining right sides together. Keeping the edge of your
foot even with the edge of the fabric (this will give you slightly more than a 1/4 seam allowance), stitch all
the way around, leaving a 3 opening on one of the sides or bottom. Clip the corners, turn. Press.
2. Place the embroidered ap right sides together with the bag back (with the pocket). Be sure the open side of
the pocket is up, and the ap is centered on the top of the bag. Stitch the ap across near the edge.
3. Place the bag back with the ap right sides together with the lining. Keeping the edge of your foot even with
the edge of the fabric (this will give you slightly more than a 1/4 seam allowance), stitch all the way around
leaving a 3 opening to turn on the bottom. Clip the corners, turn, press.

Side/bottom Panel and Strap

1. Fold the 3 x 37 strips in half lengthwise right sides together. Sew, using a 1/4 seam allowance. Using the
1 Fasturn Tube, place the strip on the tube to prepare to turn. Insert the wire through several thicknesses of
fabric and pull to just get it started. Stack the batting strips, and poke them into the open end where the
fabric is starting to get pulled into the tube. Pull the wire. The batting will get pulled along with the fabric,
through the tube.
Embroidery Club 84 Page 4

2. Lightly steam press the strap with the seam in the center. Stitch through the center with the seam side of the
strap up.
3. Cut a strip 1 x 14. Snap on your 1/4 Bias Binder. Insert the strip and sew. This will be
for the loops for the strap. Cut the sewn strip into two 6 pieces. Set aside.
4. Measure the bag sides and bottom. It should measure approximately 33 If not, adjust
your strip accordingly. Cut two strips from tone on tone plain fabric 34 x 5. Cut one strip of batting 34 x
5. Pin the ends of the 6 loops to the 5 ends of one of the strips, matching the raw edges, as shown.
5. Sew all the way around the panel leaving a 3 opening to turn. Turn, press.

6. Set your machine for free motion, and insert a size 90 topstitch needle. Thread with 12 wt. cotton Blendable
thread on top and sewing thread in the bobbin. Stitch random stippling over the side/
bottom panel.

7. Pin the side/bottom panel wrong sides together with the front. Stitch, keeping
the edge of the foot even with the edge of the fabric. Stop at the corners with the
needle in the fabric, pivot and continue sewing.
8. Pin the bag back in place, and stitch.
9. Loop the strap ends through the loops. Fold the end under and stitch a small square
to attach the handle as shown.

Embroidery Club 84 Page 5

Bag Closure:
1. Embroider 921003 on tone on tone background fabric. Carefully cut open the center eyelet
hole.
2. Place the embroidery right sides together on another piece of background fabric. Stitch close
to the embroidery, leaving a 2 opening to turn.
3. Trim, turn, insert Steam-A-Seam in the opening, and fuse closed.

Twisted Cord with Beads:

1. Using the Sulky 12 wt. Blendable thread, pull off strands about 36 of thread. You can use anything from 2 to
5 or 6 strands. The more strands, the thicker your cord will be.
2. Tie a big, sloppy knot in one end of the threads. Insert the knot into the large center hole of your bobbin.
Insert the bobbin on the bobbin winder. The knot should be down against the machine. Engage the bobbin
winder.
3. Hold the thread out in front of the machine taut. Depending on the length of your threads, you may need to
have a helper to run the machine for you if you cant reach the foot control. Push on the foot control to start
the machine. The thread will start to twist. Continue to run the machine until you feel your hand being pulled
towards the machine. Hold the thread taut at all times.
4. To nish the cord, hold the twisted threads in the center with one hand, and bring the end you have been
holding back to the bobbin with the other hand, still holding it taut. Then let go of the end that is not by the
bobbin. The thread will twist back on itself. It is a bit of a mess at rst, but run your ngers along the twist to
work out the kinks. Continue to hold the two ends together at the machine.
5. When the cord is smooth, tie off the two ends at the bobbin into a knot and your cord is nished!
6. Place three or four beads onto the cord. Slide them down. The knot should prevent them from coming off the
end. If it isnt large enough, tie a larger knot.
7. Slide two or three more on, and tie a knot about 5 from the rst knot. Your beads will be between the knots.
Knot off the cut end of the remainder of the cord. Slide on beads, and repeat, so you have two pieces of cord
with six or eight beads and a knot at each end.
8. Fold the cords in half with half the beads at each end. Insert the folded portion into the eyelet hole of the closure.
9. Select a zig zag stitch and bartack the ends inside the eyelet hole through the backing fabric.
10. Place the embroidered beaded closure on the bag ap between the two embroideries and bartack in place.
Your bag is complete! Fill it with goodies, and youre ready to go!
