1) Difference between mutation and adaptation. Does adaptation mean mutation?

No, adaptation does not mean mutation. A mutation is defined as the process by which a gene
changes from one allele to another. It is the end result of that allelic change. Mutations can
occur spontaneously due to errors in DNA replication or other spontaneous DNA damage. It
can also be induced by outside factors. Adaptation, on the other hand, is a short-term change
(via gene expression) in response to environmental factors. It does not usually involve
permanent genetic change unlike for mutation which affect the actual DNA sequence, causing a
change in protein during gene expression.

2) Differences between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells


The primary difference between them is the presence or absence of a membrane around the
cells genetic information. Procaryotes have a simple structure with a single chromosome.
Prokaryotic cells have no nuclear membrane and no organelles, such as the mitochondria and
endoplasmic reticulum. Eucaryotes have a more complex internal structure, with more than one
chromosome (DNA molecule) in the nucleus. Eukaryotic cells have a true nuclear membrane
and contain mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, and a variety of specialized
organelles. The size of the procaryotes vary from 0.5 to 3 micrometers (m) in equivalent radius.
Different species have different shapes, such as spherical or coccus, cylindrical or bacillus, or
spiral or spirillum. Procaryotic cells grow rapidly, with typical doubling times of one-half hour to
several hours. Also, procaryotes can utilize a variety of nutrients as carbon source, including
carbohydrates, hydrocarbons, proteins and CO2. Eucaryotes, on the other hand, are five to ten
times larger than procaryotes in diameter. Another major difference between them is the
presence of sterols in the cytoplasmic membrane of eucaryotes. Sterols strengthen the structure
and make the membrane less flexible.
