FHEL1034 ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION

GROUP ASSIGNMENT (40%)

PART 1 - WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 1: EVENT PROPOSAL (15%)


The Centre for Foundation Studies will be holding an Orientation Week for all new students. All
official clubs registered in the university are required to make a contribution to this event. You and
your club members (4 - 5 members) have opted to hold a two-day mini-bazaar to raise funds for the
event.
Based on the scenario above, you have to:

Conduct a survey Create a preference/opinion survey form of 10 questions to collect


opinion/feedback from your target respondents. This will serve as data to back up any
claims you make in your proposal.
Sample Preference Survey Question:
Which flavour would you prefer for cupcakes?
Sample Opinion Survey Question:
Name one action that can be taken by UTAR to improve its bus services.
You are required to distribute the survey forms to 30 respondents. Your own group
members are not allowed to be part of the respondents.

Prepare a proposal Create a formal plan detailing your event (mini-bazaar). Note that the
purpose of a proposal is to present a plan and to seek approval to carry out your event. The
event itself has not happened yet. Your proposal should be between 15 20 pages.

The following are some possible guidelines you may follow:


Introduction A brief description of your club, event, reasons for the
selection of your event and your estimated cost of the entire event.

Club Description - Name of club, history of club, objective/mission of


club, other relevant details.
Event Committee - Name of committee, organizational chart, job
responsibilities of each committee member, contact details (optional)
Event details Name of event, details of event (date, day, time, and
venue), targeted customers, theme. Product/service/activity offered by club,
table of pricing/fee charged to targeted customers. Other relevant details.
Proposed budget Your estimated cost for the entire event. Put in a table.
Promotion Mention all methods of promoting your club/event. Note that
the newsletters (from written assignment 1) must be one of your methods
of promotion. You may also mention any possibility of receiving
sponsorship in this section.
Conclusion Briefly summarise all the main points in your proposal.
Appendix Include ALL (30) survey form distributed, tables indicating
results from your 10 survey questions, sample advertisements, brochures,
posters, etc.

Format

The proposal should be typed in single-spaced pages with reasonable


margins.
Font size of 12 Times New Roman should be used.

All paragraphs should be justified.

The proposal should be printed double-sided.

Every new section should be printed on a new page.

Due Date: Week 8 (During respective lecture classes)

PART 1 - WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 2: NEWSLETTER (15%)


You and your club members (4 - 5 members) have been assigned to produce the
next issue of your club/societys newsletter. The newsletter is published bimonthly to keep students updated regarding the recent happenings in your
club/society and is also given as handouts to new members during your club
recruitment drive as a form of promotional material for your club/society. Hence,
you are to design a newsletter that should cover the following items:
i.

An introduction of your club/society


You have to create your own club/society, logo and other necessary
details
You are not allowed to use any of the existing club/society logo and
details

ii.

A collection of write-ups related to your club/society

Future Event (1 Event)
- There will be an Orientation Week conducted by UTAR staff and
students for students of the new intake. In order to organize this
major event, you will be having a 2-day flea market to raise funds.
Therefore, write an article to promote the flea market and the
products that will be sold during the flea market which can help
your society/club to raise funds to organize this mega event
successfully.
** Note: Word limit for each event write-up is 200 - 250 words

Length of Newsletter 5 pages
It should also be well-organized with main / sub-headings depending
on the topic
of the discussions.
You may include additional information or visual elements that are
relevant.

**Note: The format of the newsletter is up to the students creativity.


v. Format The newsletter should be typed in single-spaced pages with
reasonable margins. Font size of 12 Times New Roman should be used.

Other guidelines:
i. Decide how you wish to arrange your articles/graphics on each sheet of A4
paper. You are allowed to use coloured A4 paper.
ii. Include graphics and images. Excessive number of images taken from the
internet will result in a mark penalty. You are encouraged to use images
your group members have taken instead.
iii. Write factual, logical and non-offensive language/articles
iv. Seek approval from the lecturer on the society/club/organization and theme
your group wishes to choose. No two groups should have the same
club/theme.
Your final copy of the assignment should include the following:

PART 2 PROPOSAL PRESENTATION (10%)


Presentation will commence from Week 9 onwards.
Kindly take note of the following actions to take during presentation:

Give a brief description of the club/society, history, mission, vision,


organization chart etc.
Promote your future event (besides showing promotional materials and
demonstrations)

Other instructions:

All members are to be actively involved during the presentation.

Be prepared for Q & A session. Each member will be asked questions


based on the sections they are presenting.
Duration: 10-15 minutes
(strictly not less than 10 minutes)
Visual aids: Required (such as PowerPoint slides & Projector)

Dressing: Formal

End goal of presentation:


- To convince your lecturer/assessor to approve your proposal/event

Assessment will be based on:

Content & Organisation - Logical, Sequential, Systematic

Language - Accuracy, Fluency, Appropriateness

Delivery - Correct Pronunciation & Clear Articulation, Speech


Variation, Stress, Tone, Pacing, Pausing, Voice Projection, Volume
(Audible)
Non-Verbal - Eye Contact, Gesture, Posture, Attire

Audio-Visual & Supporting Aids - Relevant, Appropriate, Effective

Overall Success Time management, decorum, objective achieved
