Mrs. Scofields Honors Ninth Grade Literature and Composition Syllabus

What is this class about?
High school students will employ strong, thorough, and explicit textual evidence in their literary analyses and technical research.
They will understand the development of multiple ideas through details and structure, and track the development of complex
characters and advanced elements of plot such as frame narratives and parallel storylines. Student writing will reflect the ability to
argue effectively, employing the structure, evidence, and rhetoric necessary in the composition of effective, persuasive texts.
Students will be able to construct college-ready research papers of significant length in accordance with the guidelines of standard
format styles such as MLA. Students in high school will have built strong and varied vocabularies across multiple content areas,
including technical subjects. They will skillfully employ rhetoric and figurative language, purposefully construct tone and mood, and
identify lapses in reason or ambiguities in texts. Students will recognize nuances of meaning imparted by mode of presentation,
whether it is live drama, spoken word, digital media, film, dance, or fine art. Students will complete the course with the fully
developed ability to communicate in multiple modes of discourse demonstrating a strong command of the rules of Standard English.

Notebook:
In addition to the required textbook, students will be expected to keep an organized notebook specifically for this class. I
recommend a 1 -inch notebook, and I will be checking to see the following divisions during the second week of class.
Notebook Divisions: Vocabulary, Daily Work, Graded Work, Assessments
Grading System
Students will be evaluated on the set percentages below.
Quizzes: 20%
Assessments: 25% (Tests, Projects, Essays)

Daily: 35% (Class work, Homework, Participation)

EOCT/Midterm: 20% of final grade (Mandatory)

**Please note that this course is very writing intensive; it is impossible to pass this class without turning in writing
assignments completed according to prescribed requirements.
Essential Vocabulary
Students will keep a list of cumulative literary terms in their notebooks, and there will also be a new list of vocabulary words each
week and a quiz over these every Friday.

EOC/Georgia Milestones Information:

This course has a statewide End of Course Test (EOCT) near the end of the semester, and it will count 20% of the total grade. It
cannot be exempted. This years End of Course Test will be different than in the past. The state has released a new Georgia
Milestones Program to align with the Common Core Standards. The biggest difference for students is that, instead of taking a
multiple choice test, they will be asked to create constructed responses, citing evidence from the text they are given. Writing is,
therefore, more important than ever!
Parent Portal, Webpage, Email:
In an effort to keep parents/guardians updated and involved with their students achievements and education, parents are strongly
encouraged to track their students grade through the online gradebook. I will do my best to place copies of project handouts on my
webpage in addition to handing them out to students. I do not post daily homework on my webpage; students are encouraged to
write daily assignments and reminders in their planners from my white board.
In an effort to make sure my personal contacts are accurate, I ask that all parents send me an email during the first week of school.
Please include in the email: your students name, the phone number you prefer me to use when contacting you, and something you
want me to know about your child.

Contact Information:Mrs. Scofield can be reached by calling the school at (404) 362-3811. Please note that the easiest way to
reach me is by email. It is brandie.ivester@clayton.k12.ga.us. Please include your students name in the subject line.
I welcome any questions and concerns and will be available to see students before and after school in room 3. I look forward to
working with each student on an individual basis.
