Some key takeaways are that WhatsApp is an encrypted messaging app that was acquired by Facebook in 2014 and now has over 1 billion users worldwide.

WhatsApp was founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, both former Yahoo employees. They came up with the idea while traveling in South America and officially incorporated WhatsApp Inc. in California in February 2009.

WhatsApp is cross-platform and supports Android, iOS, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Symbian and Nokia S40. It also has a web client called WhatsApp Web.
