With the destructive

A rare insect that has killed
tens of millions of ash trees in
the United States is now active in
Burlington County.
On July 6, the state Department of Agriculture reported the
emerald ash borer had been detected in Westampton.
Emerald ash borer is a fastmoving, highly destructive invasive pest, which could lead to the
death of ash trees, said state Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H.
Fisher.
The adult emerald ash borer is
a metallic green insect about onehalf inch long and one-eighth
inch wide, making it hard to detect in the wild.
The female beetles lay eggs on
the bark of ash trees. The eggs

Charles Castillo, of Seneca High School, is given his $10,000 check for the Joe Laufer College Scholarship Award. The award has been named in honor of Joe Laufer, who passed away in 2014 at the age
of 79. Joes son Kris spoke on behalf of the Laufer family at the award ceremony and presented the
check to Castillo, who was one of four winners from the county. There were 84 total applications.

The Forgotten Angels Equine
Rescue recently completed its
largest rescue ever and is now in
need of funding for these precious lives that are in desperate
need of a fresh start with no baggage.
The 33 horses rescued, dubbed
the Shamong 33 because they
were rescued from a sold farm in
Shamong, are in need of various
services (farrier, dental, vet,
grain, hay and worming medication.)
Any amount donation would be
much appreciated and tax deductible.
For those who can give time
and not money, please consider
volunteering at the rescue, located in Medford. That will elevate
the individuals that have been
heading this operation to focus on
our newest saves, which are
not physically located at the rescue.

hatch and the larvae bore into the
bark to the fluid-conducting vessels underneath. The larvae feed
and develop, cutting off the flow
of nutrients and eventually
killing the tree.
EAB attacks and kills North
American species of true ash,
and tree death occurs three to five
years following initial infestation.
New Jersey is part of a federal
quarantine to prevent the spread
of the beetle, which prohibits
movement of ash trees outside
the quarantine zone.
The department also recommends not moving firewood,
which is a vehicle for movement
of tree-killing forest pests including EAB.
The state has set up traps in
ash trees to track EABs potential
spread in 27 Burlington County
towns.
We are currently setting up

traps in each of 76 New Jersey

towns in nine counties to delimit
the spread of emerald ash borer,
NJDA Division of Plant Industry
Director Joseph Zoltowski said.
It was first discovered in Somerset County in May 2014. Since
then, it has been discovered in
traps in Mercer and Burlington
counties.
We are still just beginning to
discover the beetle, Zoltowski
said. The results of the trapping
project may yield more information, but it is too early to tell because we are still trapping until
the end of August.
Now that the beetle is in New
Jersey and is starting to spread,
we ask that towns put plans in
place to respond to the beetle,
Fisher said.
Township officials from the
Pine Barrens region did not seem
to be too concerned about the
matter this early in the development.
At this point in time, Im more
concerned about the gypsy moth
and the pine looper moth, they

Township Administrator Doug
Cramer said. There are a lot of
fields between us and Westampton.
Hopefully this isnt going to
hit us, Shamong Township Administrator Sue Onorato said.
There hasnt been any testing
like there was for gypsy moth. We
sign up for those evaluations by
the Department of Agriculture
when they test the area to determine if there is a sufficient
amount of trees or woods that are
at risk.
Though there is concern the
beetle will cause issues for towns,
such as tree removal costs and liability if the dead tree causes damage, there is very little ash present in the Pine Barrens.
Onorato said if a tree were to
be impacted, it would be the private property owners responsibility, just as any other issues
with damaged trees or fallen
branches would be.
The biggest problem area in
the state is the northwestern
counties, where most of the ash
resources are located, Zoltowski
said.

rafting in Machu Picchu, Peru,

where I visited the ruins, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Lake Titicaca, Di
Croce said. One of the highlights
of the trip was a visit to Costa
Rica where we hiked waterfalls,
misty crater lakes and junglefringed, beautiful deserted beaches, Di Croce said.
Though Mexico is his favorite
vacation spot, one of his favorite
adventure-filled trips was driving
his daughter Gabriella to San
Diego this past winter.
They stopped at the Grand
Canyon, Las Vegas, the Meteor
Crater in northern Arizona and
one of the best preserved meteorite impact craters on earth, located in the desert of Albuquerque, New Mexico, where
they also saw a tribute to Pink
Floyd in the planetarium and participated in a pub crawl through
the downtown Nashville bars and
honky tonks.
Di Croce moved to Shamong in
1993.
I loved the area, Di Croce
said. I remember visiting Atsion
Lake as a young boy and fell in
the love with the area and returned to live here some 20 years
later.
He enjoys the people, nature
and
peacefulness
of
the
Pinelands. Di Croce refers to Shamong as a little slice of heaven.
I like the local township government, which is responsive to
our neighbors needs but not intrusive or overbearing, with some
of the best schools and lowest
taxes in all of New Jersey, Di
Croce said.
He grew up in Drexel Hill, Pa.,
where he attended Monsignor
Bonner High School and Augustinian Catholic High School in
the Roman Catholic Archdiocese
of Philadelphia.
Di Croce was a hockey fan
throughout his childhood. In fact,
he went on to play intramural ice
hockey in college at Penn State
University, attending both the
Delaware County campus and

main campus in Happy Valley.

Being a member of the Alpha
Tau Omega fraternity and a
proud Penn State graduate, Di
Croce is always sure to return a
we are with Penn State as it
is tradition to do if you are a part
of the PSU family.
One of his proudest memories
came while attending the university. Each year Penn State hosts
an event known as THON, a 48hour dance marathon that provides emotional and financial
support for cancer. THON is the
largest student-run philanthropy
in the world, and Di Croce participated in it in 1979.
He also attended the Southwestern University School of
Law J.D. in Los Angeles, and the
University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, where he
studied law enforcement and corrections. He received his diploma
in advanced international legal
studies in 1985.
Di Croce studied in Salzburg,
Austria, and worked as a young
lawyer in Rome and London.
He is now an attorney with a
new general law office opening in
downtown Shamong in the former Midlantic Bank/Mac n Tots
Childcare building where he will
offer his legal services to all of
Shamongs residents who havent
had many choices for local legal
representation.
I am excited to be able to have
such a beautiful building which
will be restored to its former
glory, Di Croce said. My goal is
to represent 20 local Shamong
businesses and continue to provide affordable caring legal services to our neighbors, many of
whom I have represented over the
years.
After running his first Marine
Corps marathon in Washington,
D.C., Di Croce had much to be
proud of throughout his young
life.
Now his proudest moments are
spent with his three kids. Samantha, Gabriella and Michael are all
graduates of Seneca High School
and the Indian Mills school system.
After Di Croces three children
went off to college, he had a little
more time on his hands.

I wanted to give back to the

town I live in and I love, Di Croce
said.
He has been a committeeman
for three years and has served on
the Shamong Planning and Zoning Board for two years.
Di Croce enjoys watching football in the fall as he cheers on his
hometown Eagles.
However, his favorite month is
January because thats the month
in which he was born.
I now celebrate a birthday
month, which I encourage everyone to do, Di Croce said.
Di Croce likes to keep it light
with his upbeat personality, but
he is appreciative of all that he
has.
I am grateful for all of the
wonderful people in my life, Di
Croce said. I love the support of
my friends, neighbors and
church, the Holy Eucharist, with
Father Andrew and Deacon Ken,
who are always there in times of
need.

School bells to ring soon

ith schools preparing to

open their doors in a few
short weeks, now is a good
time to talk about the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our first
Back to School special section, which
is included inside this issue. The second section is coming in two weeks.
In the next few weeks, well have
more comprehensive back to school
coverage, including a Q&A with the superintendent of the school district to
keep you informed of all the changes
and excitement on the horizon for the
2015-2016 school year.
At The Sun, were all about community news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meetings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.

School news
With the start of a new school year creeping up on us, we want to invite everyone
to share their news with us. From the
classroom to extra-curricular activities, let
us know what is happening in your school,
and well spread the word.

When students achieve in the classroom, in the arts, in sports, etc., we

want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire community.
We publish an On Campus section
of our paper to do just that to recognize the hard-working students in a
way that stands out from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-curricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.

If youre a teacher or principal, and

you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your people in
town should know about, tell us about
it.
If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well figure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young people is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordinary to help someone or have an outstanding accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

clear they do not have extensive background when it comes to this insect at this
point but would work with the Department
of Agriculture if there were to be an outbreak and educate residents by putting information on the township website.
The New Jersey Emerald Ash Borer
website has many resources for municipal
officials, woodland owners and residents.
New Jersey has formed a task force

made up of officials from the NJ Department of Agriculture, NJ Department of

Environmental Protection, Rutgers University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Plant Health Inspection
Service. We have developed a website with
helpful information that towns, homeowners and woodland owners can follow to
manage this insect and ash resources,
Zoltowski said.
For towns, there is an Emerald Ash
Borer Management Plan template and a
tree removal cost calculator. For homeowners, there is a risk map and treatment options. For woodland owners, there is a list

of companies that will accept ash.

Residents and municipalities must
manage both the beetle and their ash resources, Zoltowski said. By the time the
beetle has been found and killed a tree, the
beetles have moved on and are capable of
traveling 12 miles or more. So, unlike the
gypsy moth suppression program, there is
little the state can do to stop the advance of
the bug.
Report signs of the beetle to the Department of Agriculture at (609) 406-6939.
