Expectorants guaifenesin (Mucinex)


Therapeutic Use
Colds and other upper
respiratory infections
Bronchitis

Side/Adverse Effects

Administration
Increase fluid intake to help
liquefy secretions.
Notify provider if cough
worsens or high fever develops.
Use only when needed.
Do not take with combination
products for colds that also
contain guaifenesin
Do not chew or crush
sustained-release formulations.
Interventions

Patient Instructions

Dizziness, drowsiness

Monitor patients when changing


positions or ambulating.

Do not take prior to driving


or activities requiring mental
alertness.
Sit or lie down if feeling
lightheaded.
Change positions gradually.

Gastrointestinal distress
(nausea, diarrhea)

Give drug with food and/or 8 oz


of water.

Take the drug with food and/or


8 oz of water.

Allergic reaction (rash)

Stop drug and recommend


alternative therapy.

Stop taking the drug and seek


medical care.

Contraindications
Cough due to heart failure
ACE inhibitor therapy

Precautions
Chronic cough
Asthma

Interactions
Increased risk of hemorrhage
with heparin (guaifenesin
inhibits platelet function)
