Sheila Birling !

Who !
- daughter of Mr and Mrs Birling, engaged to Gerald !
- even though she seems very playful at the opening, we begin to realise she has had suspicion
about Gerald for a while. She is not a naive as she first appears to be !
- although she has never properly worked she automatically shows compassion for Eva and
questions the way her father treats her !
- sheila is often the one who offers very sound opinions on the world and delivers the real
meanings of the play !
- she is horrified by her own part in Evas death, she feels full of guilt !
- she is very perceptive; she realises Gerald knew Daisy from his reaction, to IG saying her name.
she is the first to realise Erics part in the story. She is the first to consider the inspector is not
real !
- she is curious, she wants to know about Geralds part in the story. She is not angry with him
when she hears about the affair instead she respects his honesty !
- she is becoming more mature and her perception is meant to contrast with that of her parents
incomprehension of the situation, especially Mrs Birlings !
- she is angry with her parents for trying to pretend it is not their fault. She cannot understand how
they do not feel guilt, and cannot learn what she has learnt. she begins to see her parents in
unfavourable light !
- At the end of the play she is much wiser. She can now judge her parents and Gerald from a new
perspective. her social consciences has been awoken !
- the sheila that was jelous and brash with her statements has now gone !
- this changed character represents Priestleys hopes for society, that it can change thing for the
better !

What does she do?!


- shows genuine emotion when she hears a young woman has died !
- she was responsible for having Eva fired from the dress shop!
- realises inspector cannot be lied to!
- she breaks engagement to Gerald after hearing about the affair !
- reveals that Eric has a drinking problem !
- understand that the families experience that night should change the way that they behave !

she feels shock when she hears about the death of


such a young woman, she is naive in suggesting
she drank disinfectant by accident.

I would miss it for worlds

although bitter about Geralds affair, her curiosity


needs to be satisfied and she is strong enough to
hear the full story

I had her turned out of a job

she is prepared to accept and acknowledge what


she has done

its you two who are being childish - trying not to


face the facts

sheila believes that regardless of whether IG is real


or not they have all done something wrong. whereas
her parents are relieved they might prevent a
scandal, but she is concerned that the all harmed
someone

a pretty girl in her early twenties, very pleased with


life and rather excited
last summer, when you never came near me

referring to when Gerald had an affari with Eva, he


never came near Sheila

shows that she is respectful of people of a lower

She is speaking to her parents with regards to what


has happened that evening, she is annoyed
because they think IG isn't real therefore none of the
things they all did matters

It frightens me the way your talk

Showing that she has an opinion of her own and is


not afraid to tell her parents she thinks they're
wrong. She cannot understand how they cannot
have learnt from the evening in the same way she
has.
