VP For Special Projects: Himanshu Jhoboo
I am part of the LSESU Finance Society Investment Management special projects team. I
became an active member of the society since October 2013 and my team successfully
organised events such as the Hedge Funds Skills Session and the upcoming Portfolio
Management Workshop. Through this experience, I have learned a lot on how the society
operates and had the opportunity to meet a lot of the people actively participating in the society.
I am currently the Vice President for the LSESU Mauritian Society. I find myself comfortable
I have successfully completed internships at the Central Bank of Mauritius, Deloitte LLP and the
State Bank of Mauritius Ltd. I have a good grasp of financial techniques and had the opportunity
to be exposed to the financial world via those internships.
Plans:
The Special Projects team is very distinctive and innovative part of the LSESU Finance Society.
The current team is very strong and has generated impressive ideas over the past months. The
team is also very stable and the allocation of tasks is efficient. However, there are some changes
that I would recommend to increase the productivity and credibility of the team:
Increase efficiency of events. One of the weaknesses of the team that I found was that the
implementation of events was quite slow. This was in part due to the fact that the members of
the team were focussing too heavily on the quality of events. By doing so, we missed out on
executing events at earlier dates. This turned out to be in the detriment of the members who
could have used our events to increase their knowledge base for their applications. This change
can be implemented by the start of the next academic year by being more efficient in the
transition period and making sure that the team members start working on events as soon as
possible.
Provide more incentives for participating firms/individuals. I believe that events within the
Finance Society should be a two-way interaction, rather than information flowing from a single
direction. My team has already been working on this and we hope to successfully execute this in
the Portfolio Management Workshop, where there will be interaction between the participants
and the speakers rather than simply a lecture. As the head of Special Projects, I hope to bring
this ideology to the wider part of team to make our events more useful and attractive.
More frequent meetings and feedback sessions with the team. As I mentioned, the team has
been brilliant over the past year. However, I witnessed a quite slack period, especially in the
brainstorming period of the first term. I believe that more frequent meetings with the special
projects members will be a better way to understand their ideas and try to help them with the
difficulties they are facing. This will also be a good way for members to meet up with their peers
and know more about the plans being discussed.
Commitments:
If I am elected, my priority will be the LSESU Finance Society. However, I will be contributing to the
LSESU Mauritian Society and the LSE Africa Summit 2015 simultaneously.
