CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCTION
If you want something youve never had. Then youve got to do something youve
never done. -Anonymous
There are many reasons students undertake college degree. Not everyone starts out
because they want to be an academic but because they have a goal to finish their study and to
be successful in time. Conducting research is one of the requirements to step up for graduation.
Research is a key to progress. There can be no progress without research in almost if not
all human endeavor. (Jose F. Calderon, Ed.D., 1993) There are many different reasons for
conducting research. And one of this is for academic research which is usually conducted to
prove or disprove a theory. Ultimately, research is conducted to gain a better understanding of
something or someone or to provide a solution to a problem. Some of the students might not like
writing or feel that their good at it. Also, there are a lot of distractions and things that can
demotivate you. There are ways to overcome it. Writing a thesis requires a lot of self-discipline,
perseverance and we cannot be able to do this without motivation. This motivation will be the
stepping stone to the readiness of students in conducting a research.
Albert Bandura (1986) suggests that motivation (or a lack thereof) is the result of an
individual's self-efficacy related to a task. Bandura defines self-efficacy as the beliefs we have
about ourselves that cause us to make choices, put forth effort, and persist in the face of
difficulty. The motivation to enhance skills in setting priorities reflected the view of college

students as busy people flooded with piles of activities to engage in loads of tasks to perform
requiring them to balance time. And for student, they should get ready to face all the
consequences that will come along the way.
Therefore, the researchers conducted this study for them to know the students motivation
and readiness for research.
Statement of the Problem
The study intends to know the motivation and readiness for research, particularly to Hotel
and Restaurant Management students. Specifically, this study tries to find out:
1. Why do students enroll in a research degree?
2. What are the students motivations to be ready in conducting a research?
3. How should students structure their time while taking thesis credits?
Background of the Study
This research is conducted to find out the students level of motivation for research and
the level of readiness for research activities. Since research is a gateway for completion of
education they have the obligation to enroll in a research degree. In fact, students are motivated
in different aspects that can affect their time while taking thesis. This study is conducted to
satisfy the curiosity of the researchers on how the students motivated and get ready in taking up
research study.
Significance of the Study

The study about students motivation and readiness for research can help or benefit
students, parents and teachers.
Students would be benefited by making them aware on how will they adjust on managing
their time so their academic performance would not be affected.
Parents would be given knowledge and some background guiding their children who
conducting research.
Teachers should be able to explore new ways and techniques in supervising their students
in making their research.
The study on the other hand may contribute to the knowledge of the public in regards to
the students motivation and readiness for research.
Scope and Limitation of the Study
The population of the study was composed of third year HRM students from Southern
Luzon State University, Lucban, Quezon for the school year 2015-2016.
The respondents were chosen since they are the next students in conducting a research.
Definition of Terms
For better and clearer understanding of the study, important terms used in this research are
defined operationally as follows:
Academic

The importance of students doing well in school has caught the attention of parents, legislators
and government education departments alike.

Academic research
Which is done in an academic environment, such as a university -- is presented in writing using a
specific format.
Financial
All term referring to any program that offers money to assist with the costs associated with being
a student. This includes tuition help, scholarships, living stipends, textbook costs, child care
benefits, work grants, entrepreneurship support and more.
Motivation
The act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something: the act or process of
motivating someone
Readiness
Properly prepared or finished and available for use
Research
Includes any gathering of data, information and facts for the advancement of knowledge
Students
A person who attends a school, college, or university

Time management
Organizational skills for budgeting time. Knowing how to schedule, organize and plan
accordingly is essential for management efficiency.
Conceptual Framework
The researchers conceptualized that the motivation and readiness for research can affect
the academic performance of a student. Maintaining good grades is an ongoing process factors
affecting the academic performance of students whom motivation and readiness for research
includes: students time management, financial support and stress management.

Students

The study uses Input-Process-Output (IPO) model in presenting the research paradigm.
As shown in Figure 1, inputs include the students from BS HRM students in SLSU, researches
and related readings that serve as a guide in determining the students motivation and readiness
for research. Inputs have been processed through generalizations of data gathered, conducting
surveys, analyzing the data and giving questionnaires.
