September 2014
Dear Parents / Carers,
The start of term has got underway smoothly and we are now in our third week. On
September 1st we welcomed seven new staff and on the 2nd September we saw our
largest intake of new Y7 pupils for a few years. They have been eager to start on a new
challenge - we are proud of how well they have settled in, are coping with different
teachers and rooms and joining in with clubs.
Our Open Evening is on Thursday 9th October from 4.30-7pm- it is an opportunity for Y5
and Y6 pupils and their parents to look around the school. It is an informal occasion
giving everyone the chance to talk to teachers and pupils and see the school at their own
pace. Remember that if this is not the best time for you please phone school to arrange a
more convenient time to be shown around in the school day. Please can you let your
friends who may have children in these years know about the evening.

As you know we are preparing a business case for the Local authority
and I will let you know when that is sent off, it should be ready to go in
a week.
Our KS3 results for last year's Y9 show that they achieved the most progress in many years - we are
very proud of their hard work. It is also a reflection of the dedication of our staff, both teaching and
support, and a tribute to parents whose support we value. You can see the details on our website.

Attendance has also improved over the year thank you for all your
efforts in helping with this.
"Your Say" is our new parents' group - it will meet once a term. There will be a short
presentation about a feature of school and then an open forum where parents can raise
issues. This term the meeting is on Thursday 16th October, at 6pm there will be short
talks on Accelerated Reader and Assessment.
On Saturday Sept 6th Mr Raw and Mrs Dixon took a group of pupils
including some new Y7s to take part in the Junior Great North Run, a great
day was had by all, Mr Parker our site manager competed in the adult race
on the Sunday - well done to everyone.

We are once again collecting Morrisons Lets Grow vouchers. Please ask family
and friends to look out for the vouchers when they shop. The collection box is in
reception.

Careers
This term is a very busy and important one, especially for year 9
students.
Year 9
Careers interviews will start with me, as soon as all students have
completed their Kudos questionnaire in school. This computer
programme helps them explore what occupations and/or
educational routes might suit them best, and gets them to start
thinking about the options available. Once they have a user name
and login, their information can be accessed from any computer via www.kudosonline.co.uk. All students will be seen at least once before they make their year
10 option choices and will receive a Careers Action Plan to bring home to discuss
with parents/carers.
In October we have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)
event in school and a visit to a local college students will be invited to one or
the other.
In November all students will visit one of our local partner universities (University
of Hull, York or York St John).
Year 7 and 8
All students will be visiting the Scarborough Engineering Event on 15 th October.
If you require any further information please go to the careers page of the school
website, which also has links to a variety of useful careers websites. Mrs F Sawer

different times and the safety of our students is a priority.
Cashless Catering
Please remind your son/daughter to keep a check on their dinner money account. We
have a number of students who continue to forget to top up their account. The loan
facility we operate is really there for the one-off time a student forgets their dinner
money and must be repaid the following day. Parents will be notified by text or e-mail if a
debt is not repaid. Thank you for your co-operation.
