WELCA News

WELCA members have been trying something new -- rotating monthly
presidents-program leaders.
At the October meeting Annabelle Olson offered devotional messages
related to each of the hymns she had selected for our hymn-sing. She also acquainted us
with her late friend and Concordia College classmate, Borghild Schoberg Jacobson, who
was an accomplished composer of hymns. Mrs. Jacobson's most famous hymn is, "This
My Church Shall Be."
Highlights of other meetings include: in March Bea DeFrance organized and
facilitated a Book Club sessionwe shared some of the stimulating, uplifting, and thought
-provoking books we have read; in June Sharolyn Johnson gave an informative
presentation about the domestic violence prevention/advocacy organization Someplace
Safe; and in September we worshipped and visited with residents of the Barrett Care
Center, and also assisted Pastor Rose with the service.
So far this year we have made donations totaling $3,146.38: $1,104.38 has gone
internally to Peace -- $500 for the bus decals, $250 for camperships to Luther Crest Bible
Camp, $200 for the library, and $64.38 for food for vacation Bible school; $1,900 has been
given to Grant County Food Shelf, Hoffman-Kensington Area Food Shelf, Someplace Safe,
Harvest Pack, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Disaster Response of Lutheran World
Relief, the Quilt and Kit Shipping Fund of Lutheran World Relief, Luther Crest Bible Camp,
the "Prepare the Way" capital campaign of Luther Crest Bible Camp, Lutheran Campus
Ministry at MSUM, Lutheran Campus Ministry at UMM, and Ronald McDonald House
Charities; and $262 was contributed to the national and regional WELCA.
The November meeting will be led by Norma Olson. A presentation will be given by
Joyce Shuck from United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake.

Come join usWednesday, November 5 at 1:00!

Pastors ReportThings are going well with the start of the new school year. Release Time and Perk Up
with Pastor have started. Have good new challenges. Need to call Palmer Bus as 32 kids have signed up
and around 4 more have expressed a desire to join. As church bus can only take 15 passengers at a time,
there is not time to make more than two trips to pick up the kids, so now it is more efficient to have
Palmer bring a school bus. When 5 years ago started, had hoped for 10 youth. In order for youth to
participate in the National Youth Gathering, pastor needs to have commitment from youth by early next
month. This will be an ambitious goal for fundraising. Normally the budget is $350/youth but the
anticipated cost with food, hotel and transportation for the National gathering will be around $1250/
youth. Pastor is not back on track yet with scheduling visits. Will update the website with youth infor-
mation and other updates.
Old Business
Summary of Givinghas been left out of bulletin lately. Is an oversight. Will talk to Sandy Perry
to get it back on the bulletin template.

invitation out next year and engaging youth in the service.

Stewardship of the Good News
My mom was friendly to a fault. You know the person. She would strike up a
conversation with anyone, really anywhere. It made things like, getting through a
store, or going to a community event an exciting, and particularly interesting
experience. Im sure there were people that would see her out and about that
would kindly find a different path to walk in order to avoid that days conversation,
but for the most part she was loved, and loved telling stories.
The stories of our loved ones are begging to be told: the way she used to fold
clothes, the silly story he told over and over, the look, the smile, the tears, the
laughs. They may not be easy stories to relive because sadness now creeps into
them, but healing is in the memories. Our loved ones are not forgotten.
The book of Hebrews is a good reminder of that. It describes the faith of
generation after generation, Abel through Moses, prophets, women, all who gained
approval through their faith. Until at last in chapter 12 we hear, Therefore, since
we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every
weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race
that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith...
I like that image: our dear departed cheering us on as we live our lives. We learn
from their examples, we find courage in their faith, we hang on to the hope of being
reunited when there wont be a shred of sadness.
But more than them cheering us on, one of the mysteries of our faith is that
were still connected to them. Next time you sit in church, take a good look up front
for a moment. The shape of the platform is no structural accident. It forms a
half-circle around the altar and the crosses. In some churches, the other half of the
circle encompassed the cemetery that would be in the churchs backyard. As we
gather around the Lords Supper we commune together, at the foot of the cross,
with all the saints who have finished their journey before us.
Our dear ones are far from gone. They still live in our memories and stories, still
touch our hearts, still witness to Gods love. And they live fully, truly live in
Gods presence. And I can bet you my mom is there welcoming everyone she
meets, asking them about their stories, and sharing a few too many of mine!

Strengthened by the saints,
~Pastor Matthew
