March Deaf Club
Friday night 6
th
January at March deaf club
It was Hilda Boehms 90
th
birthday that day and we all celebrated
with a big birthday cake. Friends gave her two bouquets of
flowers and we all sang Happy Birthday to her.
Hilda looks a picture of good health and happiness.
Billy Rodwell performed with his singing and signing but this time
he did not have his make up as he forgot to bring it with him.
Billy sang different songs, like Mammy, Humpty Dumpty which
was good to watch and also Silent Night.
At the end we joined him singing a song called White Christmas.
We also thanked Gisella for guiding him.
Afterwards, Elaine Heath did a mime and games with three
volunteers. Elaine explained that the mime came from a world
famous mime artist called Marcel Marceau who was French. The
three volunteers were Joan, Godfrey and Dennis. They had to copy
from one person then did it themselves not knowing what the
mime was about, Joan thought it was about a bonfire, Godfrey got
it right saying it was a cow but Dennis thought it was a bull. Bit
strange for a bull to have udders! The second mime was High
Society it was about an invitation to a posh party, Michael Pape,
David Kettle and John Uren took turns to perform from memory,
we laughed a lot at their funny acting.
By the end of the evening, we all joined in together for jokes, funny stories and word
games which went on till late in the evening but we all enjoyed it with lots of laughter
and guffaws (belly laughing). It was a great way to start the New Year at March Deaf
Club.

We had a small party to celebrate Hildas 90
th
birthday on Friday 6
th
January 2012
(photo on top left). Billy Rodwell also gave us a demonstration of singing in sign
(photo on top right). Please see the report
by Elaine Heath about the evening.
On Friday February 3
rd
2012 David Kettle
was talking about astronomy for about 90
mins. David and I brought telescopes and
books to display. 26 people came,
including four visitors from Milton Keynes
who were very interested and came to see
the telescope, books and chatted (see
photo below). Did you notice that everyone
in the photo below has their coats on? The
church hall heating was not working but
Rev. Chandler put it right, and in a few minutes we warmed up.

18 people entered the Sid Follows Shove d Trophy on Friday March 2
nd
2012. It was
a knockout competition and Rodney Hopkins won. Christine Tarrant (chairperson)
presented the trophy to Rodney (see photo above - bottom left).

cheered everyone up after the long Christmas. Thanks to the people who brought
cakes and nibbles.
On February 18th we had a quiz which Sally Clelland organised to raise money for her
daughter as she will be going to help children in Africa in the summer with her school.
They need money for books, paper, pens etc. It was good fun and about 25 people

BSL ramble around Burwell on 25
th
March
Twenty five took part in the walk.
We all remembered about the clock
going one hour forward and turned
up on time which was good. But it
was cold and a bit foggy in some
areas. We set off almost on time and
Ron Allen lead the walk as he had
practiced the walk at least twice
before 25
th
March. Ron planned the
walk saying it should take us three
hours in total for 5 miles which was
the longest of all the walks so far.
We couldnt completed the walk as most of us felt we were running out of time
so Ron cut it short and rerouted us back to the Anchor Pub for lunch and drinks.
The reason why we ran out of time was that the walkers never stop signing
(talking)!!
The weather gradually improved and the sun came out. Perfect!
The Burwell area has lots of history - Anglo- Saxons, Romans, Normans and an
old railway line. We walked along a small part of the Devils Dyke, (see above
photo) and also saw 3 deer running through the fields. A big thank you to Ron
for organizing this brilliant day.

Next BSL Walk is on Sunday May 20
th
in Grantchester
Helen Perry will be in charge of this walk.
Please meet at Byron Pool car park at 10.30am. it is between Grantchester and
Trumpington. The car park is bit small but you can park on the road. We will
walk to Cambridge and return. There are two pubs in Grantchester but it can be
very crowded. You can bring sandwiches and eat beside the river or near the car
park depending on the weather.

There will be a Peterborough BSL Walk sometime in late September
more information will be in the next newsletter.

There will be a limit of 40 people for catering purposes. Because of timing
constraints there can't be more than 8 groups (Or the wait at the finish will be
far too long for those who arrive first). Therefore either 8 groups of 5 or 7
groups of 6, (we should be able to squeeze 2 extra if needs be).

The event will start at St Catharines College at 1:30pm for tea/coffee and cake,
The 'hunt' will be around Cambridge City. Each group will be timed as they leave
and will be started at 3/4min intervals. The end location will be kept secret but
each team will be timed again as they arrive at the end. The refreshments could
last approx 1 hour (depending when your group starts) and the 'hunt' will last
approx 1 hour with the last group to leave St Catherines arriving at the finish
