Asylum Seekers: We have been involved in many ways with asylum seekers. Some of us have detention centres close to home. We have worked hard to ensure that asylum seekers receive proper pastoral care and human assistance. We now make this urgent plea for a respect for the rights of asylum seekers, not only in government circles but in the Australian community more broadly. The current policy has about it a cruelty that does no honour to our nation. (An extract from a Statement by the Australian Catholic Bishops). The Full Statement and a Statement from the National Council of Priests available in Gathering Space. Also available is the brochure I was a stranger and you welcomed me: What the Catholic Church teaches on Asylum and Migration.
