ALPHAVILLE (1965) Jean-Luc Godards science fiction crime drama utilizes French B-movie character Lemmy Caution, here as a detective with a mission to destroy the totalitarian leader of Alphaville - a sentient computer run amok. Along the way he meets Natacha, and the two fall in love as they cross an oppressive landscape which in reality consists of carefully selected locations in Paris that pieced together form a futuristic city. CHINATOWN (1974) Jake Gittes is a former cop turned private detective in 1930s Los Angeles, most often employed to expose unfaithful sposes. When he is hired to catch Hollis Mulwray in the act, he finds out after the photographs have been published that the real Evelyn Mulwray was not the one paying his bill. Hollis turns up dead, and Jake starts to snoop further, winding up with a sliced nostril as he starts to get at well-protected secrets. CLUE QUOTE-ALONG (1985) Youve done it in the library. Youve done it in the dining room. Youve even done it with a candlestick in the kitchen. Thats right, at one time or another, weve all killed Mr. Body. And for this months quote-along, were celebrating our murderous ways with CLUE, the hilarious film adaptation of the board game. Weve subtitled all of your favorite lines, so you can quip along with Wadsworth, scream along with Mrs. Peacock, and feel the flames on the side of your face with Mrs. White. DIRTY HARRY (1971) A thinly veiled plot of the Zodiac Killer, DIRTY HARRY went where no other cop film had gone before it. It questioned the authority and morals of law enforcement in a way that hadnt been shown in American film. At the time everyone on The Left considered Harry a fascist while those on The Right praised is sense of jusitce, even if it was of the vigilante kind. THE MALTESE FALCON (1941) John Hustons seminal, canonized film noir classic remains as fresh and entertaining as ever. Featuring one of the all-time great performances from Humphrey Bogart, this beautifully stylized and masterfully executed product of the classical Hollywood studio system is a perfect merging of art and entertainment. MEMENTO (2000) Guy Pearce and Joey Pants shine in this Christopher Nolan stunner that tells its story all in reverse. Pearce is Leonard Shelby, a man on the hunt for the man who murdered his wife and left him with a condition that keeps him from making new memories. Forced to live his life believing the clues he leaves for himself, he works to bring the man responsible to justice. NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) Of all the masterful works of suspense created over the course of his career, this is truly the quintessential Alfred Hitchcock movie. If PSYCHO made the world aware of how frightening showers can be, this film introduced us to an improbably terrifying crop duster. The suspense is punctuated by acutely funny jabs throughout, elevating this mistaken identity, innocent-man-on-the-run tale to a level of total magic.

BOTTLE ROCKET (1996) Wes Andersons debut feature stars Luke and Owen Wilson as old pals Dignan and Anthony, looking to make things interesting by embarking on a life of crime. After a practice run at Anthonys family home and then a small bookstore robbery, they hide out in a motel near the border where Anthony sparks up a romance with the maid Inez. Dignan, intent on sticking to his 75 year plan, joins up with a big-time heist man Mr. Henry, getting Anthony involved and further testing the bond between old friends. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (2001, 35mm) What starts off as a straight story of familial betrayal, dishonesty and disappointment becomes a deeply emotional triumph. It has a head-turning ensemble of and is the last collaboration between writers Anderson and Owen Wilson. A film that entertains, dazzles and moves, in that order, throughout. Its the movie that declared Anderson was a true cinematic force.

Sunday Cinema Club: AT CLOSE RANGE (1986, 35mm) The phrase criminally underseen has already grown tired, so please allow me to say it just this once about this movie. Afterall, it has Christopher Walken looking dangeroulsy good in a mustache and aviator glasses paired with a young Sean Penn as his witless son in what is a rather harrowing crime drama from director James Foley. Brad Jr., sick of sticking it out with his mother and her new boyfriend, flees to his criminal fathers place. Finding the lifestyle to be glamourous from the outside, he wants in, but doesnt quite have the meanness of heart and spirit that his father has to pull it off. Brad Sr. senses this weakness and sends a very nasty message to his son so he might fear for his life if he ever snitches. Broadway Brunch: CABARET (1972) Set in Berlin in 1931, this Bob Fosse film tells the story of Sally Bowles, a bohemian performer wrestling with life and love. Minnellis spirit and powerful pipes fill the screen with passion, and Joel Grey is positively electric as the MC. In addition to daring musical numbers, this film bravely explores issues of sexual identity as well as the shifting culture of 1930s Germany. Cinema Cocktails: CASINO (1995) They had it all, they ran the show, and it was paradise...while it lasted. Beneath the glitzy and glamour of the Las Vegas facade there lives a filthy underbelly of greed, deception, money, power, and murder. Robert De Niro stars as Ace, a mobster who moves to town to make his mark. In a town made of money, Ace learns the ropes and works his way to managing the Tangiers. Vegas shows its ugly face and corruptions takes over. Video Vortex: DEATH SPA (1989) Michael owns the Star Body Health Spa. Its a very futuristic place, because the computer runs the spa. Years earlier, Michaels wheelchair-bound wife died in an inferno. Today, the spa is plagued by an unseen supernatural force, which causes graphic gore, full-frontal nudity, and leotards to erupt in flames. The Graveyard Shift: HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986, 35mm) Presented by Fangoria, with an introduction by Managing Editor Michael Gingold. Michael Rooker stars in this truly terrifying examination of a brutal murderer as he selects and executes victims, capturing the crimes on videotape. The release of this film was delayed by several years, and went on to become very controversial. PSYCHO-PASS (2014) Welcome to a world where just thinking about a crime is enough to make you guilty. Bad intentions can no longer be hidden, and the police know exactly which tainted minds are about to cross over to the wrong side of the law. The great equalizer in the war on thugs is the Dominator, a futuristic weapon that can read minds and assess the risk that a citizen will turn criminal. Cops work in teams made up of Enforcers and Inspectors. Enforcers take out the bad guys, Inspectors stop their partners from going rogue, and the all-powerful Sibyl System keeps a watchful eye on us all.

St. Patricks Day Screening: THE QUIET MAN (1952) John Wayne stars as Sean Thornton, an Irish American returning to his homeland after accidentally killing a man in the boxing ring. He purchases his birth home only to find he has inadvertantly gained an enemy in Red Will Danaher, a local who had dreamed the property would one day be his. Sean meets and falls for the vivacious Mary Kate Danaher who insists that he go about courtship the proper Irish way. REPO MAN (1984, 35mm) Co-presented by Clockwork Records. Otto is a go-nowhere L.A. punk whose life takes a turn for the crazy when hes enlisted by a crew of self-destructive, nihilistic repo men. Meanwhile, a mysterious cop-evaporating force threatens to change the laws of science as we know it. Featuring a hilarious script and a soundtrack from Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Iggy Pop and Fear, plus enough zoned out new wave maniacs to fill a mental ward. Movie Party: ROAD HOUSE (1989, 35mm) Only in complete darkness surrounded by strangers can the teachings of Dalton be truly understood. Most importantly: Be nice. That is, until it is time to not be nice, in which case you personally eliminate half a towns population. Here we have Patrick Swayze as a bouncer with a national reputation as the best brought to the city of Jasper to clean up a club called the Double Deuce.
