1. (a) What are obligatory points? How do they affect road alignment? Explain by
giving suitable sketches wherever needed.
(b) Explain briefly the modified classification of road system in India as per the
Third twenty year road development plan, 1981-2001. [8+8]

2. (a) State the objects of widening pavements on horizontal curves ? What are the
factors on which the design of widening depends ? Explain.
(b) The speed of overtaking and over taken vehicles are 100 kmph and 80 kmph
respectively. If the acceleration of the of the overtaking vehicle is 2.5 kmph
per second. Calculate the safe passing sight distance for two way traffic. [8+8]

3. (a) Explain how the speed and delay studies are carried out. What are the various
uses of speed and delay studies.
(b) What are the applications of location file, spot maps, collision diagrams and
condition diagrams? [8+8]

4. (a) What is at-grade intersection? Explain various types of round abouts or ro-
taries.
(b) What are the advantages and disadvantages of rotaries? [8+8]

5. (a) Explain the procedure of designing a bituminous pavement by IRC method.


(b) Explain the importance of maintenance of roads. Discuss the problem that
can be expected due to inadequate maintenance in case of flexible pavement.

6. (a) What are the functions of rails? Name various types of rails in use. Which
one is widely used? How is the weight of rail section usually determined?
(b) List the various types of sleepers used in Indian Railways. Describe briefly
the mono block prestressed concrete sleepers. What are the reasons for its
ever-increasing adoptions world over? [8+8]

7. (a) Define Interlocking and explain the principle of interlocking. Describe the
various mechanical devices used for Interlocking.
(b) What do you understand by ?Negative superelevation?? When from layout
of a B.G. yard, a 80 curve branches off from a 40 main curve in an opposite
direction. If speed is restricted to 28.95 kmph and permissible value of cant
deficiency is 7.61 cm, determine the speed restriction on the main line. [8+8]

(b) What are the requirements of a good highway alignment ? What factors

2. (a) Define road gradient and mention its various types. Explain briefly.
(b) Calculate the super elevation is a road curve of 120 m radius with vehicle
traveling at 96 kmph. The width of the road in 15 m and coefficient of friction
is 0.12. [8+8]

3. (a) Discuss the various traffic studies and their importance.


(b) Explain various measures that may be taken to prevent accidents. [8+8]

4. (a) What are the design elements associated with a rotary intersection? What are
the design specifications? Explain.
