Overview: Sensory processing difficulties underlie the challenging and confusing behaviour of
many children including those with diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention
Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD) and Global Developmental Delay, to name a few.
Behaviourssuch as refusal to engage in particular tasks, sudden extreme reactions to a change of
situation and, repetitive behaviours such as flapping, self-pinching or rocking can indicate disturbed
sensory processing.
Understanding sensory processing can assist us to find ways to guide children to be in a calm, happy
state; to engage in learning, to show their true skills; and to socialise more successfully.
In this workshop we will examine the sensory systems, how they affect learning and everyday life.
The workshop will be presented through power point, small group activities , and discussion. Written
information will be provided for participants later reference. At the end of the workshop you will have a
range of new strategies to trial at home or school and know how to apply a process for resolving
future situations linked with sensory processing difficulties.
• What is happening with the senses when children have a sensory disturbance
• Ways to assist children to learn life’s skills despite having sensory disturbances
