Introduction
American Sign Language (ASL) is a complete, complex language that employs signs made by moving the hands combined with facial expressions and postures of the body. It is the primary language of many North Americans who are deaf and is one of several communication options used by people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Not one form of sign language is universal. Different sign languages are used in different countries or regions. Children who learn to sign before there start to speak can help their parent understand their needs and wants. We will be learning many different sign for things we use during daily task such bath, play, food, drink, etc. With learning the alphabet song and different fun songs will have the children moving around and learn two languages at once. http://danthemans.squidoo.com/sign_language_how_to_learn

The Task
In our classroom Im trying to teach the children a fun and new way to say things and by using words and ASL. ASL will help the children learn the names of things in song, games or memorization. Every child will not only learn a new language but they will build there vocabulary. It's also a fun way to learn how to spell not just using paper and pencil format. I'll teach the children during our class time the alphabet song using their fingers. We will practice a few times out the day by watching a short video and doing it together as a class. We will also practice with some finger spelling some of the words I will send home with them for the week. We will learn some everyday signs such as bathroom, outside, food, drink, water, colors etc. Theyre going to be some fun silly songs to help the children interact with their fingers. http://youtu.be/7gSZfW4gVhI Watch video

The Process
First I would like you to practice the alphabet with your child at least two times a day by watching a short video and following a long with your child for the first few days. Then try to do it without the video to see what letters your child need to work on. http://vimeo.com/41052752 http://www.schooltube.com/video/870c66babf2bdd4dab63/ Second practice finger spelling the words we will have for the week we will learn four words a week. In ASL some words aren't always finger spelling out but so the children can learn how to spell as well as ASL we will be learning both ways. You can click on the website below each lesson number to see if youre doing the signs correctly, but for the finger spelling just look at you ABC's video or use the printout. Also for the website below there are all 26 letters of alphabet I would like each student to color the picture and the hand of each sign as well. http://www.start-american-sign-language.com/printable-sign-languaget -kids.html
