Course Description This course focuses on the basic strategies and techniques for writing clear, coherent and precise essays on varied topics. Special emphasis will be given to such elements in the writing process as pre-writing, organizing details, editing, correcting and re-writing. This first part of the course will then lead into the final research and writing project. B. General Objectives ESL Research and Writing course aims at providing students with the skills essential to their successful undertaking of research work at university. C. Specific Objectives The goals of the course will be: 1- To increase the students awareness of the research and writing requirements of a university. 2- To develop the academic reading and research skills needed by all undergraduate and graduate students for the preparation of writing a research paper. These skills include: a- Familiarization with journal article formats, abstracts, and layout b- Recognition of rhetorical modes and organizational styles of research writing c- Comparison, analysis, and synthesis of information from several different sources d- Familiarization with the computerized and paper resources available in the SUAGM libraries 3- To engage in writing activities to produce an 8 to 10 research paper which exhibits logical development and clarity of thought. These processes include: a- Practice in paraphrasing, summarizing, and documenting in an acceptable format b- Development of a bibliography of sources c- Organization of the research paper in an academically acceptable style d- Integration of ideas from multiple sources e- Recognition of plagiarism as an act of cheating f- Demonstrating facility in word-processing as a tool for the production, revision, and editing of the research paper.

A. Description English 152 is a first-year level course that introduces to the process of paragraph writing development. The course teaches students how to produce great paragraphs by generating, developing, and organizing their ideas with paragraph writing skills, focusing on the three main features of a paragraph: topic sentence, supporting details and conclusion. Various types of paragraph modes will be covered: descriptive, opinion, and narrative. B. General Objectives The aim of English 152 is to introduce students to the process of paragraph writing development. C. Specific Objectives Students will be able to demonstrate mastery of the following skills: 1- Identify and apply the three main features of a paragraph. 2- Identify and write the topic sentence. 3- Identify and write a series of supporting details. 4- Identify and write a concluding sentence. 5- Write a simple paragraph. 6- Write an Opinion, Narrative, and Descriptive paragraph.
