One of his most famous paintings is "Ivan Grozny and His Son Ivan Nove16, 1581", 1885,The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.
In the foreground we can see Ivan the Terrible, who in a fit of anger struck a mortal blow to the Prince. Tsar Ivan is dressed in a monk's black clothes. The tsar`s scared face, expresses fear and madness ,his eyes, looking at nothing makes us panic. He keeps dying prince's head with his left hand, through which red blood flowing, trying to plug the hand wound on the head of his son. On the carpet we can see the staff, which became the murder weapon.

The room is in a mess, the carpet is damp. In the background we can see some scattered things. The background is dark, it is almost black. The atmosphere in the room is very depressing.

The sketch of the picture.

From the Repin`s memories known that the thought of painting originated with him in connection with the March 1881 events, namely a bomb shrapnel which killed Tsar Alexander II. Later, the idea of writing a picture of "Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan" came up with the artist, as he was returning from a concert of RimskyKorsakov, inspired by the symphonic suite "Antar".
