Photini at the Well
WHO: Photini, Christ, the Disciples Photini was a Samaritan woman and Jesus
was a Jew. During those times, these people
were enemies. When Jesus spoke to Photini,
it was practically forbidden in society. His words
and actions towards her teach us about God’s love
(Identify people in icon) for races and genders.

Samaritans were a mixed race and traditional enemies with the Jews. The Samaritans
worshipped the God of Israel and were awaiting a redeemer, they accepted only the first
5 books of the Old Testament (The Pentateuch) as their Scriptures. The Samaritans built
their own temple on Mt Gerizim, which the Jews destroyed in 128 BC.

WHAT:
WHAT The Lord is thirsty from His journey, which shows He was fully human like us, and He
stops at a well for a drink. There He meets Photini and through a conversation, He reveals
to her that He can offer Her living water that will prevent her from being thirsty ever again.
She doesn’t understand at first but she says to Jesus that she knows the Messiah, who is
called Christ, is coming. Jesus says to her, “I who speak to you am He.” Photini became
the first evangelist to proclaim to the Samaritans that Jesus was the Christ!

WHERE: A well in Samaria, the region to the North, between Judea and Galilee.
This well was located at the foot of Mount Gerizim, and is still a place
today where pilgrims can drink. Often known as Jacob's Well in Sychar.

WHEN: This happened at the 6th hour, or noon. John 4: 1-30

The Church remembers St Photini
on March 20.

WHY:
WHY Jesus shows us that He is God
God takes our ordinary thinking
and helps us to understand who He is

God revealed His identity to a woman.

God’s use of women to share His
good news

God revealed His identity to a
