Blind Tennis! Miyoshi Takei of Japan lost his sight to cancer
when he was just an infant. As a high school student in the 1980s he was determined his lack of sight was not going to stop him from trying a new sport, so he developed a new version of tennis. Because he had never even seen a game, it was a difficult undertaking. Working with his teacher he devised a game played with a special ball on a badminton court. The sport uses a modified ping pong ball which has been cut open, had ball bearings inserted (so its heavier and rattles through the air), and is then encased in foam. The courts boundaries are marked with twine which players can feel through their thin-soled shoes. The person serving calls out Ready? and the receiver must reply Yes before the ball can be served. Unlike regular tennis, the ball is allowed to bounce up to three times before it is returned. Annual championships are now attended by hundreds of players in Japan.

Sacred Ink A church in Flint, Michigan is doing everything it can to attract new parishioners, including opening a tattoo parlour. Reverend Steve Bentley of The Bridge church believes mainstream religion is no longer effective and is irrelevant to most people, so hes hired two ink artists to work at Serenity Tattoo inside the church. Bentley, who himself has two tattoos, understands some people wont like the idea, but he says tattooing is morally neutral like getting your ears pierced. We are about doing church in a different way and being relevant to people. You can get a tattoo in a clean environment. You can do it while sticking to your moral code. While its not clear if the idea is attracting new worshipers, it is helping one of the tattoo artists stay sober. Ryan Brown is a recovering alcoholic who says working inside the church is keeping him on the right path. I was running my own studio. There wasnt much purpose in it...I decided the best thing was to close it and come to the church. I figured I could have a lot more positive impact. Arty Pants A researcher in Melbourne, Australia is putting together a unique exhibit which crosses the line between art and odour. Tullia Jack has found thirty people who are willing to wear a pair of jeans five days a week for the next three months, without washing them. When the time is over, Jack will collect the jeans for her display. She is doing the experiment as part of her Master of Philosophy thesis, and hopes it will challenge our culture of what she calls extreme clean. You really dont need to wash clothes as often as you think. Stains come and go, they just wear off, she says. By not washing their jeans, participants have together saved thousands of liters of water, and spent less on washing detergent and electricity. According to Jack, the jeans dont smell socially challenging. They just smell like people. Jack is an advocate for sustainable fashion (clothing which is environmentally responsible).

Crocodile Tears It is said when someone is crying and it may be insincere, they are pushing out some crocodile tears, but why so? It is actually a biological oddity of crocodiles that helped coin the term. Crocodiles actually do cry when they eat. But it has nothing to do with remorse. When their meal is pushed to the roof of their mouth, it pushes on glands called lachrimals. These glands secrete a tearlike substance that comes from the eyes. So people decided when they see some phony crying, it is no different then the tears of a croc - who maybe welling up - but is likely not remorseful whatsoever about its prey.
