The Babylonians
The Babylonians were a great empire. They ruled from 1792 BCE to 1750 BCE. It was located on the bank of the Euphrates River. They were very smart and very good at math. They were also great astronomers. There king, Hammurabi, was a great king. To me, the Babylonians were the best empire in Mesopotamia. If you keep reading, you will see why. One reason the Babylonians were the best Mesopotamian empire was Hammurabis code, the first code of laws. The Assyrians were ruthless and cruel, the needed a code of laws. The Babylonians were fair and smart. An example of them being fair was their death for a death, eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth rule. The rule means that if you were a construction worker and you just finished a house, and the roof falls and kills the owners son, that the government would have to kill your son. The people followed the rules too. Hammurabi posted the rules up on the ziggurat, even though most of the population could not read. It is currently on display in The Louvre, with exact replicas in the Oriental Institute in the University of Chicago, the library of the Theological University of the Reformed Churches in The Netherlands, and the Pergamon Museum of Berlin. They were kept under control by using their code of laws. Another reason the Babylonians were the best Mesopotamian empire was the postal service. With the postal service, the Babylonians could send their goods. They sent grains, oils, and fabrics in exchange for timber, wine, and precious metals & stones. This also attracted merchants from other regions to come to Babylonia. No other empire had that at the time. The third reason the Babylonians were the best Mesopotamian empire was roads. This also helps trade. Most traders would take their trade to market on the roads in a cart pulled by donkeys. This also attracted merchants to Babylonia. If they were outside the empire though, they had to get there by foot or some other way. Scribes and messengers passed letters with relays stations on the roads. No

other empire had roads at the time. I believe that the Babylonians achieved the most of the Mesopotamian empires. They left a great supply behind. They left laws, which people need to follow to keep under control. They left postal service, which lets people send things and trade things easier from long distance. And finally they left roads, which also helped people trade and send things from long distances and were later used for transportation. Without the Babylonians, I wonder what the world would be like today.
