Readings: 2 Chronicles 36:14-17 4th Sunday of Lent

Psalm 137:1-6 March 22, 2009
Ephesians 2:4-10
John 3:14-21

Word: Obedience and commitment to Christ is faithfulness to God’s

covenant.
Theme: We are faithful to God’s covenant when we do good works in His
name. [Charity]
Promise: “For by grace you have been saved through faith.” (Eph 2: 8)

Reflection:

The theme for this week reminds us to be faithful to the Covenant we have made with
our Lord. We sealed it after much prayer, and decided to become active, covenanted
members of BLD.

The COVENANT that we signed states:

As Covenanted Disciples, individuals, couples, and families, we are

summoned by the Lord to membership in the BLD Covenant Community
and thus, to the holy work of evangelization and shepherding other
individuals, couples, and families towards a personal relationship with
God, through the encounter and the renewal apostolates, and through our
own personal witnessing of authentic Christian love and faith, service and
worship.

As Covenanted Disciples, we believe that membership in the BLD

Covenant Community requires a total commitment of ourselves to the
person of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It means union of mind
and heart and spirit with other Christian individuals, couples, and
families, in obedience to God the Father and at the direction of the Holy
Spirit. It is premised on the belief that living in Jesus Christ is the
essence of salvation and that full Christian maturity develops only from
true discipleship with Jesus Christ and love for others.

Our holy work of evangelizing and shepherding begins with “our own personal
witnessing of authentic Christian love and faith, service and worship.”

People are attracted to a community when there is authentic Christian love among the
members. Christian love entails love, honor and respect for one another. Romans 12:
10 says: “Love one another and respect one another with brotherly affection;
outdo one another in showing honor.” Leaders respect their subordinates by giving
them basic and clear direction, not lording it over them. They take care of those under
their charge, encouraging them in their work, speaking respectfully with them and about
them, listening to them, asking forgiveness and giving forgiveness for any wrong done,
and holding them in constant prayer. Subordinates, in turn, are to respect their leaders
by listening and obeying their initiatives– speaking with and to them with humility, and
holding them in prayer. St. Paul tells Titus: “Remind them to be under the control of
magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be open to every good enterprise”
(Titus 3:1). Subordinates should not be critical of leaders. Neither should they
undermine their position of authority. They should foster unity and not division within the
ranks, for the Word of God warns us in Jude 6: “The angels too, who did not keep
their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal
chains, in gloom, for the judgment of the great day.”

New members are encouraged to remain in community when they witness senior
members practicing a living faith, demonstrating the gentleness and humility of Jesus in
their behavior. Living faith in Jesus Christ requires that we faithfully follow His
Commandments, whether in community or in the world. We should always strive to
practice the Beatitudes.

New members also persist in community when they witness old members serving
happily. Jesus assures us that He came to serve and not to be served. We should
likewise serve in humility in whatever task or position we have been given, and grateful
to be of service to the Lord. Luke 17:10 says: “When you have done all you have
been commanded, say, we are unprofitable servants; we have done only what we
were obliged to do.” Isaiah 26:12 says: “O Lord, You mete out peace to us, for it
is You who have accomplished all we have done.”

We witness to others how we worship the Lord when we are faithful in attending the
weekly Prayer Meetings and Word Sharing Circles. St. Paul exhorts us to pray without
ceasing (1 Thess 5:17). We need to pray daily; interceding for our family and for those
in community.

When we totally commit our lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we no longer live for
ourselves. As Jesus lives in us, we live in faith in Him who has loved us, and
given Himself for us (Gal 2: 19). And as we have been begotten by Jesus, we
have to love one another, because God is love, and everyone who loves is
begotten by God and knows God… for whoever hates his brother, he is a liar, for
whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he
has not seen” (1 Jn 4:7, 20).

As we lead others to Jesus, we too will be continually transformed into the image of
Jesus, our Lord. By the Grace of God, He will lead us daily to do good works in our
family, in community, and beyond. We can then claim the promise for this week: “For
by grace you have been saved through faith.” (Eph 2: 8)
Suggested Personal Reflection Guide:

1. How have I been faithful to my covenant with the Lord?

2. What good works should I do in the name of the Lord?
