Assignment Evidence
A complete understanding of Health, Safety and Welfare is of paramount importance in todays Engineering environment. This is due to the ever increasing legislation, designed to protect yours, and others, safety. Failure to comply with the ever increasing legislation can and these days invariably do, result in civil claims and criminal prosecution. You are expected to show a complete understanding of Health, Safety and Welfare, and its effects on business.

Scenario
You are working for a Health and Safety consultancy firm and have been asked by your manager to visit two firms to assess their Health and Safety requirements. Prestige Aero Engineering ltd. is a company who service aircraft engines. At the moment they have 5 product lines, which service 5 different types of engines. They want to expand and add another line, which will mean opening a new operative wing. The management would like advice on what their Health and Safety duties would be for this new line. They tell you that the new wing will have its own tools, lifting equipment, parts and cleaning area, and they will have to take on new staff of both skilled and un-skilled workers. Dawsons Aerospace is a mechanical services company, who specialise in minor airframe repair work/sheet metalwork. During your visit, the Operations Manager tells you that he has recently expanded and taken on 15 new staff. He is very concerned about his legal responsibilities towards his new employees with regard to his and their duties under Health, Safety and Welfare Legislation. He tells you that they are all semi-skilled or unskilled workers, who have little experience in a mechanical workshop environment.

Your assignment, on behalf of your manager, is to examine and advise both these companies on how to implement the current legislation as part of the business process. Discuss Health, Safety and Welfare issues in the workplace. Include the implications of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the key requirements it places on the company and its employees.
