Materials for sustainable development: This conference is intended to bring the critical role of materials in sustainable development to the forefront. Materials researchers and engineers have myriad opportunities to incorporate sustainable development into their work, and through this conference they can discuss on their research findings on this area. Advancement in the processing, fabrication, applications and design of materials: metal, biomaterials, nanomaterials, ceramics, polymers, semiconductor and composites would be discussed. Apart from that this conference is evoking the concept of sustainable materials: efficient use of materials, green processing technology, materials life-cycle assessment and finding replacement materials (scarcity, resource availability, and materials economics). Materials for green technology: Without doubt, materials innovation will lead to cleaner environment and provide solution for harnessing cleaner, cheaper energy. Therefore, the conference covers the advancement of materials for the use to tackle several issues: materials to support alternative energy technologies, to mitigate problems with fossil-fuel technologies, and to increase energy efficiency (solar cell, battery, nuclear, fuel cell, capacitor, hydrogen, storage, transmission, superconductor etc), materials that can contribute to purification of the environment, CO emission abatement and monitoring activities, sensor devices and activities that can be done to reduce degradation and corrosion of materials or material products.
WORKSHOP on 19.11.2013: 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. (on Nanomaterials) followed by 4:00 p.m. (plenary talk by Dr. Julian
Allwood, University of Cambridge on Sustainable Materials): free for conference participants or RM350 for others.

SYMPOSIA
A. B. C. D. E. F. Green and sustainable materials Nanomaterials Structural materials Electrochemical and materials for alternative energy production Polymeric materials and composites Biomaterials/medical and pharmaceutical materials and technology
Symposium A
Chairman Co-Chairman
Shortage of energy and depletion of resources are the two main global issues that require much attention and need short and long term resolution to ensure a sustainable future. Therefore, the aim of this symposium is to focus on synthesis, production, characterization, and application of green and sustainable materials; which encompasses both organic and inorganic materials. Topics cover theoretical and computer simulation to experimental proof of concept until mass production of the materials use in semiconductor, electronic, optoelectronic, polytronic, sensor and actuator, memory applications.
Symposium B

: NANOMATERIALS
: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zainovia Lockman Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia : Prof. Atsunori Matsuda Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan
Nanomaterials, notable for their extremely small feature size have potential for wide range of applications. They can be metals, ceramics, carbon, semiconductors or polymers. They are developed to exhibit novel characteristics (such as increased chemical reactivity, better thermal and electrical conductivity and improved mechanical properties) compared to the same material in bulk size. This symposium addresses many aspects of nanomaterials: fundamental understanding on nanomaterials production including chemical and physical processes to synthesize 0dimensional (nanoparticles, core-shell), 1-dimensional (nanotubes, nanorods), 2-dimensional (thin film, laminates) and 3-dimensional (nanoporous, mesoporous) and on the development of measurement and characterization techniques, reference materials, and standards for the production of nanomaterials. This symposium also addresses on the applications and issues related to the safety of this class of materials.
Symposium C
Chairman Co-chairman
: STRUCTURAL MATERIALS
: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zuhailawati Hussain Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia : Assoc. Prof. Dr. Astuty Amrin Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
Structural materials, in particular metals and ceramic based materials, are essential for our secure, safe and affluent living as they support the basis of our society. Structural materials application depends on the knowledge of materials and their properties, in order to understand how different materials support and resist loads. The main requirements of modern structural materials are the load-carrying capacity (safety), the fitness for production, and economy. Also the structural materials should take full responsibility for the future and contribute to overcome the issues of the environment, energy and resources since their consumption and economic scale are far more predominant than those of other materials. This symposium addresses mechanical performance, environmental sensitivity and in-service performance of metals and ceramics. Submissions are encouraged in topic areas that include but not limited to: synthesis and development of metals and ceramics, forming technologies and processing innovations, corrosion and surface modification, joining technology, testing, advanced characterization and failure analysis and recycling and sustainability.
Symposium D
Chairman
With the future shortage of oil, the dependence for alternative energy will be of real importance. Electrochemical power systems will be a proven technology to replace the worlds need for energy. Electrochemical power systems such as lithium -ion batteries, fuel cells, metal-air batteries and supercapacitors will be able to replace fossil fuel as energy sources for the future. The improvement of materials in this area is continuously being done and is the key research area for improved future energy devices and systems. Therefore, this symposium will be a platform for scientists and engineers to discuss current developments in this area of science and technology.
Symposium E
Chairman Co-chairman
This symposium will focus on polymeric materials (thermoplastic, thermoset, rubber and latex) and composite materials (metal, ceramic and polymer-based composites) with unique functional properties. Innovative concepts on the use of nano-scale reinforcements (carbon nanotubes, graphene sheets, clay nanoparticles, cellulose nanocrystals, etc) in structural composites will also be discussed. Topics on the properties of such materials for a wide variety of applications including electronic, automotive, construction, aerospace, aviation, environmental remediation, recreation and sporting goods light are welcomed. Selected papers presented in this symposium will be published in a special issue of International Journal of Automotive & Mechanical Engineering (IJAME) (SCOPUS cited).
Symposium F
Chairman
Biomaterials are matters that exhibit naturally or man-made that comprise of whole or part of a living structure or biomedical device which perform, augment or replace natural function. Field of biomaterials science is progressing steady and spreading versatile directions. Biomaterials have been used in joint replacements, bone plates, bone cements, dental implants, drug delivery systems, diagnostic kits etc. This symposium covers full spectrum of research and innovation in biomaterials in order to exchange information among scientists working in the biomaterials field from the viewpoint of materials science as well as from a clinical perspective.
