Art 207 Graphic Design Applications Fall 2012

Full Catalog Description In-depth study of graphic design software including paint and vector-based programs. Tutorials guide students through detailed exploration of layout, paint, and draw programs. Two class hours, two studio hours. Prerequisites: ART105 and ART209 Criteria for Grading & Attendance Students will be graded on their attendance, class participation and the timely completion of professional level assignments. 2 unexcused absences will be allowed. After that the student's grade will decrease half a letter grade for every subsequent absence. Projects will be reduced 1/2 a letter grade for every day they are late. Required Reading/Supplies Adobe InDesign Classroom in a Book 2 jump drives or Portable Hard Drive Various Paper and Printing Supplies Portfolio Lynda.com Account Course Schedule Students will complete work for the college and community on an as needed basis to expand their portfolio, improve their design skills and improve their skill in dealing with clients. Weeks 1-5 Introduce students to draw programs and the concept of vectors in graphics and their use in design . Create basic shapes Use a bezier pen tool and control lines and curves Use layers Manage colors and patterns Format text Create illustrations from photographs Use the above skills to create an advertisement Complete assigned project(s) using draw program and add to portfolio Weeks 5-10 Introduce students to Paint/Pixel based programs and the concept of the le resolution and scanning basics. Use selection tools Use layers Scan images

Understand le resolution Use color modes appropriately Use lters Understand the appropriate uses of text in Photoshop Create realistic composite imagery Complete assigned projects(s) using paint/pixel program and add to portfolio. Weeks 10-15 Introduce students to Layout programs and the concept of importing les into a program that organizes a whole Create complete layouts Link text boxes Import linked graphics that are properly formatted Manage colors within Indesign Use frames and borders Fine tune text using typographic skills learned in ART107 Create a brochure that incorporates all the skills learned in the class. Complete assigned projects(s) using paint/pixel program and add to portfolio Week 16 Create nal portfolio of work completed in ART207 After completion of this course students will be well versed in the programs allowing them to spend their energy on design ideas. Students will learn the characteristics of each of the major graphic design software programs, how what they have learned applies to the eld of graphic design, and how to use these programs to complete graphic design projects. Student Performance Outcomes: Upon successful completing of the course, as documented by projects, class discussion, and instructor critiques, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate the following skills in the use of vector based programs: a.) create basic shapes b.) use a bezier pen tool to control lines and curves in the creation of illustrations. c.) create illustrations from photographs d.) use layers e.) manage colors, gradients and patterns f.) use and create brushes g.) format text 2. Translate a photograph into an illustration for an advertisement. 3. Demonstrate the following skills in the use of Paint/Pixel/Bitmap programs: a.) utilize advanced selection tools b.) employ layers c.) scan images d.) determine proper le resolution e.) use color modes appropriately f.) use lters 4. Document knowledge in the appropriate uses of text in Photoshop

5. Create realistic composite imagery. 6. Integrate skills by creating a functional advertisement. 7. Demonstrate the following skills in the use of layout programs: a.) link text boxes b.) import linked graphics that are properly formatted and manage linked les and fonts. c.) create custom colors and manage color modes within a document. d.) appropriately use frames and borders. e.) ne tune text using typographic skills. f.) create text wrap arounds. g.) manage multi-page documents. 8. Create a brochure that incorporates the full array of learned skills.* * This course objective has been identied as a student learning outcome that must be formally assessed as part of the College's Comprehensive Assessment Plan. All faculty teaching this course must collect the required data (see Assessing Student Learning Outcomes form) And submit the required analysis and documentation at the conclusion of the semester to the Ofce of Assessment and Special Projects. Plagiarism Statement Plagiarism is the dual act of presenting and claiming the words, ideas, data, or creations of others as ones own. Plagiarism may be intentional--as in a false claim of authorship-or unintentional--as in a failure to document information sources using MLA, APA, CBE, or other style sheets or manuals adopted by instructors in the College. Presenting ideas in the exact or nearly exact wording as found in primary or secondary sources constitutes plagiarism, as does patching together paraphrased statements without intext citation. Each faculty member will determine appropriate responses to plagiarism. Disciplinary action resulting from conrmed instances of plagiarism and/or cheating may include receipt of a failing grade on an assignment or the course, removal of a student from a class, or expulsion of a student from the College.
