MATERIALS
both projects Silamide or Nymo D conditioned with beeswax beading needles, #13 long earrings 2g Japanese seed beads, size 150 2 12mm crystal hearts 4 4mm bicone crystals 4 4mm round crystals 2 6mm round crystals 2 3mm soldered jump rings short earrings 2g Japanese seed beads, size 150 2 8mm crystal hearts 6 4mm bicone crystals 2 3mm soldered jump rings ear wires 4 4mm bicone crystals 16 in. (46cm) 22-gauge wire chain- and roundnose pliers wire cutters 14 in. (6mm) dowel metal file

Whether you like daring dangles or dainty drops, these earrings are the perfect pair. Start with any bead with a top-drilled hole, then make a beaded bail and cover it in branched fringe. Create custom ear wires for a professional look. by Anna Nehs

Long earrings [1] String eight 150s, a
crystal heart, eight 150s, a 4mm bicone, a 150, a 4mm round, a 150, a 6mm round,

a 150, a 4mm round, a 150, a 4mm bicone, and a 150 to the middle of a 1-yd. (91cm) length of thread (figure 1, ab). [2] Pick up a jump ring and sew back through the beads,

continuing through the first eight 150s strung in step 1 (bc). [3] Pick up seven 150s, skip the last 150, and sew back through the next two 150s (cd). [4] Pick up three 150s, skip the last 150, and sew back through the next two 150s. Then sew through the next two 150s of the original seven (de). [5] Repeat step 4 twice. Go through the next two 150s on the bail (ef).

[6] Repeat steps 35 to


complete three more sets of fringe, exiting the last 150 on the bail (fg). Secure the thread with half-hitch knots between a few beads (Basics, p. 172). [7] Thread a needle on the tail and sew through the eight 150s on the other side of the bail. Repeat the branched fringe on this side of the heart. [8] Make a second earring to match the first. Short earrings [1] String four 150s, a small


heart, and four 150s. Then string an alternating pattern of three 4mm bicones and three 150s (figure 2, ab). Slide these beads to the middle of a 1-yd. length of thread. [2] Pick up a jump ring and sew back through the beads to point c. [3] Pick up five 150s, skip the last 150, and sew back through the next three 150s (cd). [4] Pick up four 150s, skip the last 150, and sew through the next three 150s. Continue through the next 150 of the original five and through the next 150 on the bail (de). [5] Repeat steps 34 to

complete three more sets of fringe. Secure the tail with half-hitch knots and trim. [6] Thread a needle on the tail and sew through the four beads on the other side of the bail. Repeat steps 34 four times. [7] Make a second earring to match the first.

Heart ear wires [1] Make a right-angle bend

pliers about 14 in. (6mm) from the bend on the long end of the wire. Bend the wire around the pliers to mirror the other side (photo b). [4] Bend the long wire back on itself (photo c). [5] String a 4mm bicone and form the remaining wire around a dowel to make the curve. Trim the wire to the desired length and file the end.
