Music subscription service provider Spotify has launched in New Zealand as anyone with a Facebook page will know. Its been the talk of the town ever since the launch last week with punters having their say and dissecting the service across all social media platforms, further proving Spotifys own mantra that the digital life is the one were all living, so why shouldt that be reflected musically? The Auckland Council has confirmed its support of the 600-seat waterfront theatre development by maintaining its budget allocation of $10 million in the Long Term Plan. While Auckland does have many smaller theatres and studios around the CBD, the new development will be one that aims to push the citys cultural value along with the reinvention of the Auckland waterfront. The Auckland Theatre Company is delighted with the outcome of the councils $21.7million pledge of the $35million fundraising target. The ATC is actively pursuing other funding avenues to fill the gap, with the next report back on progress to Auckland Council happening in September.

Seven of the films that will be screening at this years New Zealand International Film Festival have been announced. While there are still plenty more to come, so far we know that the festival will feature: Frederick Wisemans titular documentary kaleidoscopic cinematic romp about French cabaret club Crazy Horse; Lynn Sheltons misunderstanding coming-of-age funny drama Your Sisters Sister starring Emily Blunt and Mark Duplass; Kevin Macdonalds longawaited authorised documentary on Marley; Jack Blacks unfamiliar role as a closeted Texan in Bernie directed by Richard Linklater; the competitive expose on the ins and outs of professional ballet in Bess Kargmans First Position; Lee Hirschs ultimate provocative documentary Bully which explores the all-toofamiliar and in some cases potentially fatal notion of bullying in American highschools; and Amy Bergs investigation of the infamous three Arkansas teenagers convicted for murdering three eight year old boys known as the West Memphis Three in the chilling West of Memphis. The New Zealand International Film Festival launches in Auckland on Thursday 19 July before heading around the country see nzff.co.nz for more details.

TIM RIPPER OWENS
Listeners around the country were treated last week to the launch of on-demand subscription service and music provider Spotify. Late last year the word went out that the music provider would be launching, and it couldnt have come at a better time with all of the Internet police chasing after anyone and everyone who is trying to download anything for free. Spotify is described as ...your new music collection. Your library. Only this time your collection is vast: millions of tracks and counting. Spotify comes in all shapes and sizes, available for your PC, Mac, home audio system and mobile phone. Wherever you go, your music follows you. Anyone with a Facebook account will have seen the updates of what your friends are listening to, and as far as the uptake on the service goes, the biggest whinge weve heard is that users feel uncomfortable with Spotify notifying their friends what youre listening to. Its a little harder to get your guilty pleasure fix when its being broadcast on your timeline, so you might have to stop pretending that you dont like the new Nicki Minaj track. There are three separate subscription options available with three payment options. One is free and allows listeners to browse the entire catalogue available with the online service from your computer. The cheapest payment option is $7.49 per month and gives you access to Spotifys radio mode, as well as not having to be put through ads while youre using the service. The most expensive option is $12.99 a month and gives you access to all of Spotifys services including playing songs from your mobile, accessing your playlists offline on both your computer and phone, and allows you to play Spotify through other music systems. You can read more about the service and get familiar with it all at spotify.com/nz. Yes, there are other services like Spotify that have been around for a while, and yes, its not as if Spotify is a revolutionary concept. But it is one that has been utilised around the world and has a relatively good repertoire from music labels who are a big factor in how online content is being distributed and provided. Labels know that people stream and download for free, and if this is the new system of the future that the technological age utilises then its best to stop fighting it and learn how to work with it. If you cant beat em, join em. What this means for New Zealand is that we finally have a large scale, mainstream music provider as a subscription service that rivals the iTunes way of purchasing music. Many people have to come to terms with the fact that downloading copyrighted content is illegal and you can get fined some hefty penance for breaking the law. Downloading music (as well as films, television shows and other content) for free has become a generational thing that both the savvy and layman consumer has become adjusted to, but theres only so long people can get away with that in this social and economic environment. Whether or not people will go for it and realise the fact that this kind of business model may be one of the ways of the future in terms of record labels and music distribution, only time will tell on that front.

From memory, a friend of mine went to see Ghostface last time he came, and she was super excited afterwards because he signed her boob. With any luck itll happen to her again and he can sign the other one.

Canadian post-hardcore five-piece Silverstein play the second of their two shows at Zeal in West Auckland on Tuesday to an all ages crowd, following their Wellington show at Bar Medusa on Monday.

I must admit it was with some trepidation that I approached a new release from one of rocks most gloriously reviled performers. It was well over a decade ago that Marilyn Mansons shock-and-awe tactics carved him out an indelible place in music history; like some dark embodiment of the American psyche his arresting visual style, ear-splitting scream and grotesque charm carried him to superstardom in the late 90s. Yet Mansons last two studio albums came close to self parody. The ideas were tepid, the lyrics at times awkward, and the shock tactics seemed to have lost any real purpose. For a man whose early career seemed to evoke the enthralling dance of a slow motion car crash, to see him fall into the clich mediocrity of an aging rock star was a little saddening. However, Born villain is a revitalising breath of fresh air that sees the iconic frontman returning to the gritty production values and devil-may-care arrogance that made albums like antichrist Superstar so mesmerising. Far more multilayered and mature than recent efforts, Born villain is shot through with Mansons personality: charismatic, aggressive, and virulently hedonistic. Opening track Hey, Cruel World is an arresting nail-you-to-the-wall

shot of energy that leaves you with high expectations for the rest of the album expectations which, by and large, are met and sometimes exceeded. Lyrically, the album is personal and authentic, filled with metaphorical imagery of flowers and guns, much in keeping with Mansons dark aesthetic. The songwriting partnership of Manson and Twiggy Ramirez seems to have taken a step forward on this album; a variety of styles are at play throughout, running from glam rock to industrial. Particular highlights are The Gardener which has the lazy cool of Iggy Pop and evokes classic Manson tracks such as Lunchbox, and Lay Down Your Goddamn Arms which has blues riffs heavy enough to form a black hole. Theres even a tongue-in-cheek cover of Carly Simons Youre So Vain replete with Johnny Depp making a cameo on guitar. By the time Breaking The Same Old Ground rolls around, the irony of that title becomes abundantly clear: this is Manson breaking out of the rut he dug for himself and going somewhere new. All in all, its a far cry from the immersive rock operas that gained Manson his devout following, but fans can at least rest assured hes back on the right track.

Fairy Tail Collection 1 A Review by Harlequin Jones Fairy Tail is an anime about fuckin magic yo! Well, wizards n shit. Lucy Heartfilia is a young girl who thinks magic and wizards are super cool, and one day she meets a wizard called Natsu Dragneel, a boy who is on a mission to find his foster parent, a dragon. No shit! Once she finds out that he is part of this wizard club called Fairy Tail she goes traveling with him and joins the club too! Natsu has a really cute flying cat thing that follows him around everywhere called Happy. The Fairy Tail wizard club, or guild I think they call it, is a bunch of magic people who drink heaps and fight each other, but they also go and work jobs for people, like killing monsters and stop evil illegal wizard clubs using their super magic powers. If I were a wizard I would make a spell that cooks for me or have some flying shoes or some shit. A flying cat would be rad too.

PRIME, 8:30PM

Comedian Paul Merton sets his sights on discovering the wonders of modern Europe in this new series. In the first episode the funnyman meets the leader of a political movement known as the Apple Front, plays chess boxing, studies giant bunny breeding and samples naked bowling before experiencing some kind of bizarre spa.

British director Michael Winterbottom is known for his versatility his repertoire including A Mighty Heart, 24 Hour Party People and the controversially sexual 9 Songs. Once again he throws viewers into another world, transporting Thomas Hardys Tess of The dUrbevilles into present-day India. Tess becomes Trishna, played by Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, whose striking beauty is her characters greatest gift and curse. Winterbottom cleverly twists a Victorian fable of power and exploitation into a thoroughly modern and tragic love story. If Slumdog and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel are tour guide movies, Trishna goes off the beaten track, spanning Indias poor and wealthy from the hard-living rural life of the protagonists roots in Rajasthan

to the glossy, kitsch Bollywood world she finds herself drawn to in Mumbai. Trishnas identity fluctuates throughout as she navigates her way from labourer to glamorous city-dweller to servant, and Pinto plays the character with strength and humility, despite the increasingly degrading things shes subjected to. When life doesnt pan out as expected, theres a moment that feels lost and what happens next is forced. Using a naturalistic style that almost lends it a documentary feel, Trishna drags its way through the first hour and steams through the second. As the drama begins to develop, its moving but jarring, as though panic has set in. The result is a film that is intoxicating, emotional and exhausting. Youll feel like youve been to India and back.

Fans of Childrens Hospital and Party Down will find this more appealing than anyone else, with an incredibly talented cast featuring Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Michael Ian Black, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, June Diane Raphael, Paul Scheer, Ben Stiller and more. A parody of reality television shows in the same vein as The Bachelor, Burning love follows a fireman looking for love in all the right places. What could go wrong? Hopefully everything with this cast and crew behind it. We cant stress how high our expectations are of this show get online and start streaming with the premiere airing early next week.

Yep, its that time again when the Oscars for kids manage to actually get good talent on the show. If the industry wank and pretention was taken out of the Academy Awards and replaced by cheap marketing tactics and jokes, it would be the MTV Movie Awards. But its actually fun to watch, so whatever.

Mexico 23 Britomart Place, Auckland CBD

Maybe youre thinking that royalty isnt your buzz and youd rather celebrate another country thats not in the Commonwealth. If you havent been to Mexico yet youre a damn fool. Tequila is classy and elegant while still giving you a boost of bratty energy, Sangria comes in a giant jug and the food at Mexico is spicier than the dancing love child of Salma Hayek and Ricky Martin.

Snapdragon 204 quay St, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland

Kick off Queens Birthday weekend at Snapdragon where two levels of party come together for one night of mayhem. That kind of mayhem you want to be a part of where people all look sexy and have fun, not rioting mayhem. On Friday 01 June DJs P Money, Dan Aux, Jason Eli and Normski will be playing on both levels of Snapdragon until late where you can grab three Becks beers for $20 to share with your mates. Free entry before 10pm.

Chapel 147 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby, Auckland

Like Chapel Bar & Bistros Facebook page this week and go in the draw to win a trip to Las Vegas for you and a friend in association with grabaseat. You and your buddy could be partying Vegas style all thanks to the good folks at Chapel. Get on it quick, the competition will be drawn Friday 08 June. Terms and conditions apply, see the Chapel Bar & Bistro Facebook page for more info.

WRITTEn BY JOSH LInG

MOnSTERS unITE: LADY GAGAS Born This Way Ball COMES TO OuR SHORES nExT WEEK. JOSH LInG TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT THE AuDIEnCE IS In FOR AT AuCKLAnDS VECTOR AREnA. Love her or hate her, Stefani Germanotta (AKA Lady Gaga) is undeniably one of the most eye-catching phenomena of the last decade. After all, shes recently been featured on The Simpsons. And thats when you know youve made it, right? Whether shes garbed top-to-toe in a meat dress at the MTv vMAs (you shouldve seen how scared eminem was) or screaming, obama, I know youre listening! at a gay rights rally, theres one thing you cant deny: Mama Monster knows how to turn heads. Last here for a widely praised, sold-out tour in 2010, Lady Gaga is on her way back to our shores for the Born This Way Ball this June. This will be the artists follow-up circuit to the hit Monster Ball tour, boasting more extravagance, showmanship and spectacle than ever before. Count yourselves lucky, as the singers provocative acts and costumes led to a cancelled Indonesian circuit just this week due to security concerns in the Islamic state. Nonetheless, the entire tour spans further corners of the globe, more cities and more dates than anything else shes ever taken on. More than just a performance, Lady Gagas concerts have been known to be sheer masterpieces of showbiz. With frequent outfit changes (ranging from the bedazzled to the bizarre), heavily talented backup dancers and a symphony of lasers and lights, this superstars shows are a sight to behold. The haus of Gaga and I have worked for months conceiving a spectacular stage, says the pop star. The Born This Way Ball is an electro-MetalPop-opera; the tale of the Beginning, the genesis of the Kingdom of Fame. how we were birthed and how we will die celebrating. With hundreds of awards and five Grammys under her belt, the pop supernova will be performing award-winning tracks ranging from The Fame, The Fame Monster and the latest album Born This Way. Long-time collaborator Fernando Garibay sums it up: This album was the most personal because of the amount of the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team. every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme. Were excited now, putting that into the tour and expressing that on a live performance level. According to Gagas Twitter, the stage took months to build, and was modelled after a medieval Gothic castle complete with viewing towers, intricate carvings and a large catwalk to interact with the audience. And if there wasnt enough to look forward to already, Gagas been converting the central area of the concert into what she calls The Monster Pit. Diehard fans and those willing to tough out the wait in line (whilst dressed for the ball) have the chance to be picked for entry into this exclusive section. The first in line will be christened holder of the Monster Pit Key (which symbolically opens the Monster Pit for all the little monsters) and a select few will be chosen by the haus of Gaga to go backstage and meet Mama Monster in person. So heres our fingers... I mean, claws crossed.

WITh A NeW name but with a noticeably similar logo and sound to former incarnation Blindspott Blacklistt lead singer Damian Alexander cant wait to get back on the road. Its been too long, five years to be exact, since the boys properly toured the country since Blindspotts 2007 farewell tour. You get to see all your fans on Facebook, but when you get down there you have this vision of who they are and what they are like but it is different to actually meet them, thats the fun bit and performing, laughs Damian. Blindspott pioneered a new type of sound at a time when no one was doing anything like it a DJ in a rock band? It was a crazy concept. But their signature sound, with chart-topping singles including Phlex, room to Breathe and Nil by Mouth, showed they were to be taken seriously. But like many bands before them, Blindspott was also subjected to publicised fall-outs within the band that led to a heated split in 2007. Their most public dispute was over the name a dispute that became a court saga. Former drummer Shelton Woolright claimed a stake in the name in 2011, and took legal action to bar the four remaining members from playing under that title. A year later, the issue is unresolved and Blacklistt was born. There was never any progress from the beginning, explains Damian. Its just one of those things that we fought as much as we could, but at the end of the day the law states certain things that became a real nightmare. While he is open about the events, Damian is clearly saddened that the legal dramas inside a courtroom detracted from their work on stage. he says being dragged into the name battle was draining; especially when the band was something they had poured our heart and soul into for ten years. Their name may have changed, but the sound is as distinct as it has ever been. Damian muses that in hindsight, the second album wasnt as natural as the debut, but acknowledges that the new music is a return to form. We dont fight what comes naturally. The first record we did that was something that was natural and this is the same. Were not thinking about anything but writing music like how will we market it or who will this speak to, fuck that. We just want to write the music we want to write. Their songs have already received a dynamic response. Damian says fans have posted on their Facebook wall, or messaged them, talking about how the songs have given them strength and helped them out. And at the end of the day, Damian says its that kind of response that makes it all worth fighting for.
see theM live: BLACKLISTT SEE TOuRS & EVEnTS

AFTer A LoNG wait, London-based Kiwi singer Ladyhawke is enjoying the thrill of music again something she thought she had lost. It was doing what she loved that proved to be her undoing. Non-stop touring for two years on the back of her successful debut album Ladyhawke from 2008, Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke, was burnt out and in need of some solid downtime. Ladyhawke is very candid and open about her exhaustion. She realises it was a difficult time, the result of some extreme overworking. her snyth-heavy, chart-topping hits had given her the opportunity to travel from North American to europe, winning award after award. But by the time she came to round two, she didnt even want to hear a single note. All I wanted to do is sleep all the time. It wasnt like me, she explains. I couldnt think. I felt oversaturated with music I didnt want to hear the radio or play a CD in my car I was over it. Five months rest and recuperation later though, Ladyhawke was back. The time off was exactly what she needed to get back in the studio to begin recording her highly anticipated sophomore album Anxiety. A fitting title, perhaps, for a singer who confesses she felt increased pressure to perform. I started to overthink it, she says. People would say, Working on the second album is tough. It became difficult because I started to build it up in my own head. Its clear that Ladyhawke is now anxiety-free and feeling relaxed. She says catching up with friends and playing video games helped her get through the dark five months. And when her love of listening to music returned, she knew it was time to write again. I had to get to the point that I was chomping at the bit to make music, she says. I recorded most of the album in the South of France with Pascal Gabriel. It was amazing; he lives in a village with 500 people, in a 2000-year-old tower with the studio at the top. It was good for me no distractions. The silence was deafening. No Tv, nothing. Just music. her first single, Black, White & Blue, harks back to her Kiwi roots and marks a shift in her sound. Lyrically, she acknowledges that the album was written in a different headspace, opening up a lot of truths and a lot of storytelling. [Black, White & Blue] is sort of a reality check song. You should be empowered, but when you have moments when you doubt yourself, looking up at the sky its sort of reminded me the universe is huge and Im so tiny and insignificant that I should get over my problems, thats how it is to me, she laughs.
