City of Split
Split is located in the warmest part of the northern Mediterranean coast, in the very centre of the Adriatic coast. The rich offer for tourists as well as the unique cultural heritage and tourist events gives Split its special charm and makes it an ideal holiday destination throughout the year. Dalmatia region is characterised by the highest number of sunny days that on some of the islands and along the deep southern coast number as many as 315 a year. Split is the economic and administrative center of Middle Dalmatia, with about 200,000 inhabitants and the jumping-off point for exploration of the coast and islands of the beautiful Croatian Adriatic. Split is also a university seat and host to numerous scientific institutions. The site was first settled when, at the end of the third century AD, the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here. Many of Split's historical and cultural buildings can be found within the walls of UNESCO protected Diocletian's Palace. In addition, numerous museums, the National Theatre, and old churches and other archeological sites in the Split region make it an important cultural attraction. Marjan hill, a forest park near the city offers a comfortable and quiet atmosphere and a walk far from the town noise. Central Split is quite compact and most sights can be easily seen and best experienced on foot, but there are frequent local buses to outlying attractions and the airport.
